Engl...Powerball vs Savage? and other amps...i can't decide what to do...

Can anyone give me a rundown on the sound differences b/t the Engl Savage and Engl Powerball? i tend to run for the powerball since it's 6l6 powered and all the amps i seem to like are 6l6 amps for some reason...but the Savage sounds sweet also fom what i have heard. i've listened to tons of clips of both and depending on settings they can sound quite similar in clips (to my ears) or fairly different (both sound great)!! is that the case live and in person (that they are fairly similar) or are they drastically different sounds...sometimes you just can't tell from a clip. basically any info about the two and how they relate to eachother in terms of gain, treble, mid. and bass would be great...such as which seems to have a more usable high gain and which has more low end etc etc along those lines. the amp will be used 90%+ for high gain metal and punk.

oh and i ask b/c i think it's time for a new head and matching 4x12 cab and so far Engl is leading in my choices but i can't count out a good ol' mesa dual recto. and i'm even contemplating a line 6 vetta II so i can cover all grounds and sounds with it. right now i have a peavey ultra plus 120W head which i use through a marshall 1960 cab with no complaints and i will be keeping and i also have a '79 marshall JMP 50w that collects dust and for bedroom use a podXT/atomic 1x12 combo which can get some killer sounds which makes me think the vetta II might not be a bad choice for me.

my head is spinning with amp choices so i figured i'd try and get it down to one of the two Engls at least against a dual rect and the vetta II then go down from there 'til i figure out which fits my needs best.

so far and Engl seems like the best route and the dual rect is just a safe fallback since i know i can get sounds i like from it from using them in the studio for rehersal. but that vetta II may be great since it covers mesa sounds, engl sounds, 5150 sounds tons of built in effects, two amps at once and even diezel sounds which is a great bonus since a diezel is a bit above the price i'm willing to spend on a head and 4x12 cab (are they nuts? lol)....or i may kick myself if the vetta II won't cut through the mix like some say modeling amps tend to do....anyone have any info on that? can the vetta II keep up in high gain situations and at times with semi-scooped mids or will it just get lost as the mids get turned down? that's seems to be my only fear with the vetta II...i know i can get it to sound good with tweaking, that's not a problem at all since i can get my podxt/atomic 1x12 to sound great but i only use that for practice, not with my whole loud ass band hahaha.

any info on any of the above would be great from owners of the amps or people who have tried them.

thanks!!!

Hej man
get the ENGL RITCHIE BLACKMORE.
it´s more metal and more mids and bone crushing distortion than the AIRY sound of the others.

Re: Engl...Powerball vs Savage? and other amps...i can't decide what to do...

You have a 4x12 atomic for bedroom use. That must be able to get loud as hell. I have a 1x12 that can shake my walls.
If you want honest engl opinions then post on the harmonycentral amp forum. They are really into engl and there's lots of powerball owners there.

Re: Engl...Powerball vs Savage? and other amps...i can't decide what to do...

whoops that was a typo on one of those...the atomic is a 1x12...thanks for the info, i'm not a big fan of the HC boards but i guess i can do some searching in past threads since no one here wants to help...BOOOOO :laugh2:

I know that the Powerball and Savage use different power tubes, but I think they are both 120W heads and both have 4 channels, I think.

I know that the Powerball is used by more power metal bands, but I've never directly compared the two, so I can't tell you why that is ...

Re: Engl...Powerball vs Savage? and other amps...i can't decide what to do...

thanks TO..well after listening to every engl clip i could find i think the powerball would be best for me...but i'm still thinking about the vetta II the mesa and now a Bogner or perhaps even a diezel VH4 although that price just drives me nuts...not that i can't buy it but that i don't see why the damn thing is over $4k and if i should bother spending that much cash on an amp...i'd love to own it but justifying spending that much cash on a head is hard to do!

Not too hard once you play the Diezel, imo! It's a great head.

Re: Engl...Powerball vs Savage? and other amps...i can't decide what to do...

TO...i have a feeling that's what's going to happen when i play through the VH4 but i almost don't want it too. after looking at prices online it comes to this...which boutique amp is really worth the cash?

$1800 for a powerball ($1200 for engl XXL 4x12 cab)...$3k total, no problem...

$2,600 for a bogner uberschall ($1000 for 4x12 uber. cab)...$3,600 total, not bad...

$3200 for a Bogner ecstasy ($1,050 for 4x12 matching cab)...$4250 total, a little high but not bad for what you get...

Diezel VH4 $4250 ($1300 for 4x12 diezel cab)...$5,550 total, that's a bit scary IMO

i still can't figure out why the diezel setup is "worth" so much more than any of the others when they are all said to be killer amps...it's just the justification of spending $5k on head and cab that i'm having a hard time with...sure i want the thing but do i "need" to spend that much to get killer tone when a bogner is over $1k less and an Engl is even less than that?

i guess after i try a few at ultrasound it will help a bunch but i'm still stuck and need to track down a powerball to try in person.

Burk...thank's for the link, that's the site where i first heard and Engl and loved it!

Have you ever considered purchasing online through eBay? If you buy from a guy who sells a lot of boutique stuff, you'll be fine and you'll save quite a bit of money.

I routinely see Bogner Ubers for around $2300, Ecstasy's for around $2500-2600 and Diezel's around $3200. If you shop smart you won't have to shell out as much dough.

as long as it's new, i don't care where it comes from...if i can score a VH4 for $3200 i think i'd go for that before i even play through the thing lol. for boutique amps for some reason i never thought to check ebay and i'm constantly on ebay...i just checked websites for prices.

Ultra is a Diezel dealer ... talk to Jeff about it; he'll give you a guy in CT to call. :)

Re: Engl...Powerball vs Savage? and other amps...i can't decide what to do...

yeah i saw that on their site as well as a bogner dealer so that's a plus...i guess this all has to wait til i go to ultra an play through everything i can get my hands on lol.

Oh yeah! LOL

I played thru an Ecstacy 2 weeks ago and it took a long time to get a sound I liked out of it, and it still wasn't 'my' sound. Fact is: you're right, you gotta play thru em all and see what suits you best.

hahahaha i'm not exactly rich i just know how to save the cash i make to buy high quality items with it...i never settle for less than what i want!! if i have X saved now and can get a bogner with it but a diezel for X more will fit me better then i'll wait and save the other cash for the amp that fits my needs better...there's no huge rush and i don't want to kick myself later! also, i'd hate to play guitar through a rig i didn't like...it would lose all it's fun. so if i have to save up a load of cash to get the sound i want, so be it, it's only money, i'll make more tomorrow is the way to look at it. you only live once so you might as well have fun and enjoy the best you can and live with no "i wish i" or "i should have"!!
