Epi Les Paul Custom

Hi there,

I have recently purchased an Epiphone les paul Custom. Very happy with the guitar in general but the pickups are very average (very muddy sounding) What do you guys think would be a good choice bearing in mind that I want something with gold plated covers. I play hard rock/Metal

you can get all duncan pickups with gold covers if you want...I would look into a 59 in the neck and a Custom in the bridge if I were you, or maybe a Jazz in the neck and a Distortion in the bridge , or maybe just a set of Distortions...I know that's alot of choices, but it's a start!

If you have an amp that pushes a lot of gain on it's own, I would say a Pearly Gates set. I have one in my LP and it rocks plenty hard through the high gain patches in my GT-8 or through my Mesa V-Twin.

If you preffer a hotter bridge pickup or have a slightly tamer amp, I'd go with a Pearly Gates in the neck and either a Custom or Custom 5 in the bridge.

i have used epi les pauls with the pearly gates bridge and the distortion bridge and liked them both.

Congrats on the new guitar. I have a Custom bridge in my LP. It is great for hard rock and can do decent metal as well IMO. The combinations mentioned above are definitely worth considering.

What kind of sound are you looking for?

What kind of amp do you have??


I had a '59 in the neck of my old Epi LP Custom and it royally sucked for most kinds of music I played. I don't like the '59n anyway but it was even worse in this particular guitar due to the fact that the guitar doesn't have the maple top to bring some brightness in like regular LPs do....that and the combination of the '59n made everything sound like muddy ass with too much bass.

I have a cheap Ashton all tupe head (Australian design Chinese built) its actually quite a nice amp and very cheap. I am after a Metallica (Justice for All, Black Album) kind of sound. My amp certainly ain't no boogie but I have had a mate play through it with a Jackson (don't know which model) and he got a pretty good tone out of it. My LP sounds ok just a bit muddy when I have heaps of gain.
