Anyone played these? Are these just standard Epiphone fare or are they alil better as they are a special run? I have a bud that is looking at a refurb at a good price. Ive played regular epi explorers and they were ok, but light and sorta cheap feeling. But played and sounded ok.. Just curious about the 84s.

i played one at ash like a year ago, wasn't as crappy feeling as the other ones, but there were definite QC issues happenin, like goopy paint job, seemed haphazardly slapped together etc. it may have been just that one, but still. Needless to say i was not shocked by the quality.

Epiphones were pretty crappy at that time. I wouldn't touch it, personally, unless it somehow called to me (or if it cost almost nothing). They got much better starting in the '90's IMO. Especially the Korean Samick ones. I have owned a few Korean Samick-made early '90's Epis that were outstanding guitars. It breaks my heart to think about my stolen arctic white '92 Sheraton.

Are you talking about an actual one from the year 1984? or the "1984" ones that came out like two years ago? i was speaking about the latter.

I played one recently that I found in the used section of Guitar Center. Finish was good. Good or bad, the setup was as good as most USA made Gibsons. Definately one of the better Epiphones I've played, honestly aside from the name on the headstock it seemed as good as a Gibson, though there was some finish cracking at the neck joint.
I'm still thinking of getting it for those moments I want to play Master of Puppets

Thanks for this thread. I've been racking my brain trying to figure out whether to get the "new" 1984 explorer or the LTD snakebyte. A reputable guitar tech in town said to watch out for guitars with the "hockey puck" headstocks. Over time, due to constant string tension, the necks can begin to twist. This was the case on an old cruddy LTD Lynch kamikaze I had. Has this happened to anyone?

Ive had my explorer for a number of years with no issues. Guys like Ricky Medlocke and the guys in AirBourne (I think) play old explorers for years, so I assume they dont have issues.

I have a goth edition `58 explorer and its one of the best players I've ever owned. I'm not sure when it was made though. Seems like I've owned it for about 10 years.
