Epiphone DOT vs PRS SE Semi Hollow?

Hey guys!

I want to grab a cheap semi hollow and throw in some pickups and locking tuners. I used to own an Epi Dot that I thought was amazing for the price but the size of the body was not too comfortable. So, I am considering going anc playing a bunch of PRS SE Semi-Hollows! Man, the SE series is really nice.

I don't play a lot of Semi Hollow but it would be nice for a change up here and there!

Thanks!

Re: Epiphone DOT vs PRS SE Semi Hollow?

You're going to get more of a hollowbody sound and overtones from a 335 with it's larger body and two F holes/chambers. A 335 fits in the gap between hollow and solid bodies; that PRS fits into the gap between 335's and solid bodies.

I like PRS SE's, but for semi-hollowbodies I prefer a 335 myself and find them very comfortable. Matter of preference.

Re: Epiphone DOT vs PRS SE Semi Hollow?

That is a good call, they look great too. I found the neck does not play as well as a Gibson or PRS SE.
Do you find them consistent? Changing the pickups is hell.

Re: Epiphone DOT vs PRS SE Semi Hollow?

I played a lot of Dots and Sheratons a few years ago when I was looking at semi-hollows. I didn't find any that were both put-together well' and had good tone. I ended up with an Ibanez, but sold it later because I couldn't find pickups that meshed with it. Pickup changed are a nightmare on guitars like that. I say, go with the PRS or save up for a real 335.

Re: Epiphone DOT vs PRS SE Semi Hollow?

That is odd because the Dots I played were built well air sounded dynamite!
However, I hate the size and the neck does not play as nice as the PRS or my Gibsons.
These days I would rather not spend a lot on guitars and amps because I would rather focus money in other areas of my life and with so many bang for the buck guitars available, I won't be spending $1500 on a Gibson. I already have my LPs, SGs, real PRS and Fender. Going forward will be imports with pickup changes.

Re: Epiphone DOT vs PRS SE Semi Hollow?

Comfort, consistency and quality are most important to me. When I used my Epi Dot and my LP with the band, it was hard to tell them apart, both sounded great and similar so I will probably end up in the PRS camp.

I went and tried a PRS SE semi hollow today. Wow, I am getting one!!!! I like it more than a 335. PRS is amazing with what they are capable of!!!!

What about a smaller Ibanez:

Re: Epiphone DOT vs PRS SE Semi Hollow?

Was roaming around our GC today and tried several Epiphone Sheridans and dots and the one with the computer stuff. Was underenthused about all of them. They played fairly well or sounded good, just not both at the same time.

I realize that Hagstrom isn't in the op, but I'd like to throw it in anyhow:

I have an Ibanez AS73 335 wanna be that is great...Did the pickups and wiring, nut and stuff, but scored it for $175...Thought maybe something was wrong with it upon winning it off E Bay...But just a great guitar!

Thank You...Even better after you turned me onto the 59B UOA5! Thought about moving the controls and the input jack down to lefty position, but can't see myself drilling those extra holes and all.. ;o)

Re: Epiphone DOT vs PRS SE Semi Hollow?

+1. I've always liked them, good guitars.

Yep, they are shockingly well built and sound great. A pickup change makes them every bit as good as the real thing! :approve:

I believe I prefer the Dot Deluxe.

Blue, what's your pickup of choice in the DOT? Gibson 57 Classic? :)

Anyone know what makes a Dot Deluxe different from the Dot?

I would vote for an Ibanez AM73 in flat brown. They're less than $300 new, and would come up used for around $200 or so, maybe less. Same shape as the bigger semi hollows, but a more reasonable size...about the same width as a Les Paul. To boot, Ibanez had this idea three decades before Gibson.

Dot Deluxes have flame tops and gold hardware, which puts them closer to a Sheraton feature-wise. A few DD's have small block inlays.

PAF's are always good in a 335. If you want more horsepower in the bridge, a C8/'59N is excellent.

Is there more attention to detail with the Dot Deluxes?

By the way, have you tried the PRS SE Semi Hollow? They are great!

How about a Schecter C1/EA
