are you talking about vintage or current production? you can't argue the inconsistencies in current production instruments but older gibsons/fenders have a reason that the brands became as popular as they are. Right now those two companies just kinda churn stuff out and sell it the quality isn't the same.
That's a good post (above) but I differ in some of the details. I have never played a 'dog' Gibson and I have had probably a hundred in my hands. I have owned 9 or 10 and still have 5. As for Fender...same with USA Fender...I have not played a dog USA Fender. I did have an alder strat that I wasn't wowed by but it was smooth and played great - it may have been my prior strat which was ash which kept me from being wowed by the alder one. Now, the Classic Vibe series? I have picked up 2 recently in 2 different stores and the necks both had back bow.
As to the PRS SE semis, they definitely have their own thing going on. The necks are amazing and the overall quality of the build is top notch - even if they aren't 'for you' the quality is undeniable.
