are you talking about vintage or current production? you can't argue the inconsistencies in current production instruments but older gibsons/fenders have a reason that the brands became as popular as they are. Right now those two companies just kinda churn stuff out and sell it the quality isn't the same.

Hw about the Epiphone Elite series??? They seem like a nice compromise. The Epiphone Dot's I tried feel cheap next to a real Gibson.

Of course Epis feel cheap ...they are. I'm sure there are some great ones. But the vintage Gibson 335s like 59 to 63, just are in a class by themselves. It's just a shame you have to be as wealthy as Keith to by one.

To be honest; The Epiphone brand is terrible. People will disagree... Now there are exceptions to the rule, you know the story worker x won the Lotto the night before and made an exceptional musical instrument. At least the Epi looks like a real 335. No weird finishes or bizarre horns. At least they don't have the unfinished aggressive headstock of the PRS. The best headstocks IMHO are Martin, Gibson, and CBS fender Strats. Remember you can't make a SILK PURSE OUT OF A SOWS EAR. No one here remembers how people would take a Firebird or A Fiero and try to make them look like a Testarosa. By the way I never liked the Testarosa. Now if you are a Luthier I'm sure you can turn an Epiphone dot into a real ES335, but all the money and time you will never get back when you sell the beast. I'm not ranting it's just I've been down the Sows Ear path before. :smack::lol:

Hey Blue, just following up. I have played a lot of Chinese made Epi Dots lately and I swear thwey compare favorably to a lot of new Gibsons ES-335s I have played. Many people will argue this all night, but for me, the import ES-335 Dot islenty good. This is especially true since a semi hollow body guitar is not a go-to or main guitar.

Do you know what year was the first for the Chinese Dots?

I like that PRS, but its construction is not really similar to a Dot. You're talking about a solid body that has some acoustic guitar properties vs. a guitar that, while never designed to be played acoustically, has strong acoustic guitar roots. I think I'd decide which one of those things I wanted before comparing exact models.

They are outstanding – as good as Gibsons. But they're 2x to 3x the cost of what the OP is looking at.

Word, the elite Epi's are fantastic. I played an Ebony SG and it was probably the best SG i've ever played. Nice to see this thread back. I just got a Dot a month or so, I paid basically nothing for it. I'm pretty happy with it all around. I've played a bunch of 339's and a few 335's and was never blown away by either. I have been very impressed by some Casinos and Sheratons. The Dot's can be great if you find one that plays ok and doesn't look so cheesy. For some reason the red ones always look so cheap to me.

Okay let me say I BOUGHT AN EPI. I KNOW I SLAGGED IT! That being said the Japanese way is the only way to go. Get the natural ones if that floats your boat. The best product for the money is a Burney, Greco or Orville. But I don't want to spend a GRAND on a non Gibson guitar. The Prejudiced in my town say they wont give a high resale value to anything that does not say FENDER OR GIBSON on it. How's that for positive thinking?" :p

I don't see the virtue in starting another thread and talking about the same thing, which is what the majority of threads here are (countless rehashes of previously-discussed topics). Not like there's all kinds of new things to talk about on weekly (or monthly) basis.

Let's start basic. Get a great expensive Marshall or Fender amp. Now get the top of the line Epiphone with the RS harness installed. With the Seymour Duncan antiquitys. With the graphite nut. With the set up from heaven. And soon you'll be up there with Eric Clapton.
