Epiphone G400

Re: Epiphone G400

Whats with the spacer thingy b/t the neck PU and the fretboard? I never understood what it was for or its purpose?

Re: Epiphone G400

Seems like the C5 is popular among SG players.. Good choice??

The mids between the C5 (or lack) just fit in so well with the mids of the SG. It makes for a really well balanced bridge pickup. I've had a C5, Crazy 8, C5, Custom, then back to C5 in my G400. The C5 just works great.

AFAIK it's only purpose is to conceal the neck/body joint.

Mike,
That is great info! Just what I needed as I was considering all of those pups. Ill try the C5 first..

Re: Epiphone G400

I'd have to agree that out of these, the C5 is tops. I use 250K's to take off a little treble, and that gives it plenty of mids.

Usually when I need to shave alittle off the top,Ill put in a Alnico4 magnet. a C4 has much the same tone as a C5 with alittle off the top and bottom. My Explorer was alittle Boomy in the lows, a C4 took care of it.

Incidently, my Black G400 arrived yest!!!!!!!!! Got it new off the bay, at a great price. I love it! Just dont like the neck dive cuz of the strp button placement.
I almost went with the blue one, but most of my guits are black. I have 3 white ones and 2 purple..haha
Stock pups are suprisingly good, but Ill toss in a C5 tonight.

That covers up the area where the neck and body are glued together.

I love my Epi Iommi. I did find the truss rod one full turn loose.:eyecrazy: I modded the body by installing a panel jack on the edge. I wired up a 4P3T toggle switch to allow standard/split/parallel swtiching, and placed it into where the output jack was.

I would say this is one guitar that likes E, Eb tuning. The tone really tightens up, and shows its teeth with these pickups and string tensions.

not the greatest pic in the world:

Re: Epiphone G400

Very cool! If Id have had the extra $, Id have gone with the Iommi. Would be hard to side mount a jack in a reg SG tho cuz the bodies are thinner.

That is one thing Ive always hated about the SGs are the jack on the front..

Re: Epiphone G400

I'll take this one:

That's the one I have, I like it a lot. I still need to do a fret file on it, never had an Epi that didn't need some sort of fretwork. Actually never had anything from Korea or China that had great fretwork out of the box. Comes with Grovers, a good bridge, spring lock tailpiece and decent electronics.

Epi pups aren't horrendous, just sort of plain, I don't find them very well balanced but for $300 what do you want? I have a 59/Custom hybrid in the bridge and it is all right, I find the Customs a bit stiff sounding and the hybrid no different really. I'm not big on high output buckers if I keep it I'll upgrade to 59's.

Put some elbow grease and decent pups into one and I think you have a pretty sporting axe. Not a Gibby but an excellent alternative for sure.

Re: Epiphone G400

Ok, baby got a C5 in the brigde last night. Talk about a match made in heaven!! That is the shizniz.. Perfect balance and sweet sounding. Started with flat eq on my amp, great.. Dailed in some mids on the amp, and Whoa!!! Singing like an opera star... Amazing what you can get for 2 and a half bills these days..

Thanks for the recommend!! My extra C5 is a trem spaced, so I wasnt sure it would fit..
In order to match the open coil look, I changed the neck pup to one that I pulled out of one of my Epi Pauls. It is a pretty decent pup and will hold me over till I get some cash to replace it

Sounds good, BloodRose. I'm glad you like the C5.

I took an updated shot of my G400 not long ago, and just uploaded it this morning. It's not a great pic, but it'll do. This seemed like the appropriate place to share.
