Epiphone Les Paul Modern

Re: Epiphone Les Paul Modern

So they can make a modern guitar for not a lot of $$, they just chose not to until now.

I think Gibson have had some say in what Epiphone can do or not. There has been some speculation that the new lineup has been made not to battle Gibson, but other brands that have "Les Paul models" and "Sg models" that have had better features than Epiphone.

I think Mincer was referring to the fact that Gibson churns out the same old **** each and every year and charges buyers an atrocious amount of money. The price keeps going up while quality and innovation stalls at best. Or at least that's what I thought of when I read his post. But it could be said of any large/historic guitar company.

Ok. I thought he meant Epiphone.

Re: Epiphone Les Paul Modern

'New' one? My Epi Dot was made in 2000 and has the same headstock shape.

They used to be only used on certain models, now they are using it across the board I guess. I prefer the look as well. It doesn't look like a cut up Gibson headstock anymore.

Re: Epiphone Les Paul Modern

Yeah
Gibson still makes the models these are based on

If there is no Gibson,
The percieved value disappears

Then everyone complains about the $700 price of the Epiphone

I don't think there is actually any perceived value based on the comparable Gibson model. The prices are WAY too different. The pricing of Epi is related to other similar import guitars. Even then, the prices of Epi models are actually LESS than comparable guitars (Epi still makes models at $300 - 500.

Is there even a Gibson that has the same features as this Epi?

$599 at Musician's Friend

Regarding today's market, even if it was 800-1000 USD, it would still be a lot of guitar for the money... The Gibson stuff is basically a 2000+ USD upcharge for a logo and inferior specs (at least on paper). And I bet this 600 USD will go down in a few months-years on the used market, making them a real steal for those like 'em.

Re: Epiphone Les Paul Modern

To me, the old headstock was already-oversized. So the new one is worse. Maybe i am in the minority, but... ewh.

No, I don't like either, either. I would have gone for something a lot smaller.

Re: Epiphone Les Paul Modern

That is a lot of guitar at that price point. Definitely worth looking into. And that sparkling burgundy. Wow!

As for the headstock, it's the old headstock with the little side dips filled in to make it more like the Gibson headstock. It's definitely not the same as the one on the right in the pics shown here. That one is narrower and longer. The new one may be a little longer below the E tuners to the nut but it doesn't look like it's much.

Re: Epiphone Les Paul Modern

What I don't get is that people don't have issues telling a Squier from a Fender, and their headstock is the same shape.

Could it be that its because Squier went defunct for a good decade or so before being resurrected by Fender to become their budget line, while Epiphone never really went away and Gibson - as far as I know - acquired them due to market competition and by keeping some distinct visual elements and some Epiphone models they try to suggest that Epi stands on its own?

Re: Epiphone Les Paul Modern

No doubt the line is successful- people don't see Epi as a separate line, though. They see it as more affordable versions of Gibsons. Their most popular models are not the holdovers from when Epi was a separate company.

I get it.:) But what I'm saying is that maybe the company tries to counter that opinion by keeping some unique visual elements, like the headstock shape. Squier headstocks say that Squier by Fender. That tell me that Fender doesn't try to make ppl believe that its something separate. Jacksons or Charvel don't say Jackson by Fender etc They are kept as an identity on their own, unlike the Squier line. But Epis are just Epiphone, not Epiphone by Gibson, which makes think tha however weak effort it may be, it is aimed keeping the illusion of being separate. I might be overthinking this though...:D

Re: Epiphone Les Paul Modern

The Modern is the way I want an LP to be (if it has a tummy cut...I can't tell if it does).
