Epiphone Les Paul Standard versus Fender Standard Strat?

I am going to music school in 14days, and I am abit reluclant to bring my Charvel with me, because it means alot to me and is my favorite, also because I dont want it to be stolen.

I have been looking at a few guitars and I can have these:

1: Fender Standard Strat from Mex.
2 years old, in good condition. Maple board and blue body.

Price:
420dollars.

2: Epiphone Les Paul Standard.

Brand new, vintage sunburst.

Price: 550dollars.

Or a Black Epiphone Flying V for 550.

I like to play Motorhead, Dio, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and all sort of 80s metal.

I am pretty torn with these guitars, I could sand the Strat down and get a cool Fast Eddie Clarke style guitar or a sykes like les paul :S

Yeah I would agree... But really you can only decide yourself. They sound and play very different so just try a bunch and decide which you like most.

Ach Rid... I do not want that Fernandes, I know it is dirt cheap, but I dont like them

I guess the strat is for me then, it looked great in what looked like a Ocean Turqouise color.

$420 used for a MIM standard strat? Semms pretty high. I know they've come up in price a little but the last I looked they were around $350 new, aren't they?

Anyway, I like all three options, are you going to replace pickups? If so, my Epi LP with Jimmy Page wiring is at least as versatile as a Strat, I'd say much more so. With a new wiring scheme and at least one bucker the Strat is in incredibly versatile too. It really comes down to playing them and seeing which fits better. Since you have a Charvel, the Strat will probably fit better, but by getting the LP you have a great 1-2 punch when you come back from school.

You have hand problems and you want your LP low slung? Buddy that's not really good for the hands. Sling it higher if you want less cramps and overall pain.


I'd go for the Strat myself. The new Mexican ones are better instruments than any Epiphone LP I tried. Better woods and constructions, they sound pretty stratty, don't lack power and as usual with any strats are easily upgradable. Great bang for the buck.

Hmm I have thought about it, and I will go with the strat.

Everything is also interchangeable on it, which is great for a working mans guitar

Does anyone know what the difference is between the new upgraded standards and the old ones are?
