Epiphone or Gibson SG?

Re: Epiphone or Gibson SG?

The craftmenship of the gibson, I believe is better as well as the materials used. I could be wrong.

Re: Epiphone or Gibson SG?

Epiphone SG: Might have a maple neck, might have an alder body, poorer quality pickups and hardware, poly finish instead of nitro, the neck and body are made from more pieces of poorer quality wood, and so on.

Re: Epiphone or Gibson SG?

Another thing: Epiphone are not Gibsons, do not think of them as "little Gibsons." They sound and feel different from one another. Think of them as two different guitars, and not takes of the same idea any more than a les paul and a strat are a take of the same idea.

Re: Epiphone or Gibson SG?

epiphone are generally just "lower quality" - they are made with different woods, poorer electronics, and the general craftsmanship and consistency isn't as good as a Gibson. Bear in mind, however, that Epis are still decent guitars, and there is a good variation in quality between different Epiphone and Gibson ranges; recently, a poll on these boards showed that a lot of people prefer the Epiphone Elitist Les Paul to the Gibson Les Paul Studio (which is a similar price).

IMO, a standard epiphone can be a strong instrument when given new pups and plugged into a decent amp.

They're different, but not THAT different. Both SGs are rear routed, double cutaway guitars. They LOOK almost exactly the same, which is the reason many people get Epiphones. No one with any guitar knowledge at all would confuse a Les Paul and a Strat. ;)

Re: Epiphone or Gibson SG?

The difference in price between a new Epi G400 and used Gibson SG isn't that much. If you really have your heart set on a SG, just try to find a used SG Standard. They can be had for around $750 if you look around a bit.

That said, Epiphone SGs are very nice guitars so long as you swap out the horrible pickups.

Good luck!

Re: Epiphone or Gibson SG?

In my experience, the Epiphone guitars are similar in shape to the Gibson counterparts, but they are slightly different in size, not exactly the same shape- for example- I had a Epi reissue Dot 335, then I bought a real Gibson 335, the Gibson would fit in the Epi's case, but the Epi would not fit into the Gibson case. THis was confirmed by my bud at my local GC. If you look at the Epi SG, it is a slightly different size the the Gibson SG. mostly around the body's waste, and the cutaways. Most of the electronics except for the pickups in some cases, are crap. THe selector switches are notorious for their going bad quickly. The pots usually aren't the same quality as Gibson's.
IMO, go for the real thing!

Really, the Epi is a fine guitar if you're going to be pounding it, taking it on tour, throwing it in a gig bag, tossing it in the back of the van, generally abusing the guitar, and not expecting much of anything when you do decide to sell it. It's not the same quality of wood. It's not the same quality of hardware and electronics. I'll let you decide if the quality of craftsmanship is equal... (therein is a huge debate...)

If you want decent wood, a decent finish, decent hardware, decent electronics and a good resale value- go with the Gibson. If you believe Gibson is the evil empire or whatever... buy a used Gibson then you get a better guitar and the money doesn't go into Henry the Antichrist's pockets.

+1 i havent tried tokai but if you dont have to wait a long time id suggest the ltd viper 400

and major guitar corporations are killing the quality of guitars and trading it for advertising which makes them come out ahead but its the musician that trusts in the quality (sound, durability, feel, etc) that suffers
