Epiphone Silverburst Les Paul Custom!!!

Re: Epiphone Silverburst Les Paul Custom!!!

the more i look at it the less i like it... they didn't do the burst the same as the Gibsons

Re: Epiphone Silverburst Les Paul Custom!!!

:omg: damn more gas. They did the burst the same(I think) but it's not aged.

The alder body killed it for me... that's NOT a Les Paul Custom.

No Buick auto paint either, right?

Re: Epiphone Silverburst Les Paul Custom!!!

The whole body is not alder. The top is. Rather than carved maple, it's carved alder. The rest of it is mahogany, or luan (Phillipine Mahogany). They don't sound bad at all. You just have to pick through a few to find the one that sings.

I've played plenty of Epi's to know the gems from the dogs. Chances are it's MIK so the QC may be inconsistent. If it's MIC, I expect the QC to be along the lines of the newer Standards and Standard Plus models, which is really really good these days.

Re: Epiphone Silverburst Les Paul Custom!!!

I surf these on ebay all the time. I don't like epi's skinny burst outline. This is not one of those things you can cheap out IMO. If the SB ain't a gibson it ain't anything! Does look cool though if all, you want is a silver & black axe. And Epi quality/sound is decent - and awesome price/performance vs Gibson

Re: Epiphone Silverburst Les Paul Custom!!!

At $600 I think you can do better. Agile will give you a real maple top and ebony board for that price.

+1 And stock USA Duncans, and Grover tuners, and possibly abalone inlays, and triple bound body / headstock, and.... :)

LUAN?????? That is the worst possible wood to use on anything- typically it's used for Cigar Boxes.

When I used to do carpentry on boats and buy Honduran Mahogany (yes- entire boats were once made of Honduran Mahogany- it's the yachting industry that deminished that wood- not guitar makers), a shady lumber yard would try to pass off Luan as Mahogany- it was much lighter, and was white like white Korina. One time someone used it and it warped and rotted apart within a month. Now that I know Epiphone uses it I'll never buy Epiphone!!!!!

I wouldn't be suprised if Epiphone's Korina guitars are actually Luan since Luan looks like Mahogany but is white, just like Korina or Limba. I have a few Korina strat bodies and they are rock solid and only a few ounces lighter than Honduran Mahogany

You're right...that's a different burst pattern than Gibby uses.

Why is it all these manufacturers have a bunch of new products and none of their websites are updated? Jackson and Charvel in particular come to mind, but it seems to be the same thing accross the board.

That's what I've been told, just passing it on. Not sure how much truth there is to that. If that is what my Standard Plus is made of, it sure sounds good to me. Not a darn thing wrong with it. From what I was able to tell by looking in the wire channel between the neck and bridge, the wood has a red color to it so it may well be a cheaper mahogany. There doesn't appear to be any finish on that area.

I'd like to know for sure what they use but that could be task unless someone has one they'd like to volunteer for a stripdown and inspection (man, that sounds bad.....lol).

I never understood the allure of the Silverbursts...at all

As for Luan..there's all kinds of hearsay about whether the import guitars are using Luan, or phillipine mahogany or if they are indeed the same exact thing . You cannot get a clearcut (no pun intended) answer....

What is clear to me, is that most of the imports are NOT using the same type of mahogany you get on a Gibson, or Hamer or other american made guitar (african or Honduras). The wood grain is totally different on an Epi, Korean Dean, the Edwards I had...and it's lighter in color amost like maple. My Tokai's grain is different enough that I have some question about it as well. But w/ the Korean/Chinese stuff there's no question it's not the same.

Re: Epiphone Silverburst Les Paul Custom!!!

5000 posts...:boggled:

and I think I've had 2000 different guitars during the time it took me to rack up that number! :bigthumb:

Re: Epiphone Silverburst Les Paul Custom!!!

awesome looking guitar...I need a gibson though although I like the epi les paul standard that I have...

Re: Epiphone Silverburst Les Paul Custom!!!

tool guitarist likes em

I think they look cool, I like chrome as opposed to the gold on the majority of black lp customs, but I like white binding, not yellow/aged binding

Re: Epiphone Silverburst Les Paul Custom!!!

if you've seen tool live, and been close to adam jones, you'd think silverburst les pauls were cool, :32:
