Does anyone have some experience with this amp? From everything I've seen and heard, it's a good amp overall and excellent for the price. Any comments?

Re: Epiphone So Cal 50

sounds pretty good. the clean channel was pulling of some pretty good countly tones. there is one in town I will ahve to try out. Seems like a really good amp.

Re: Epiphone So Cal 50

yeah i've watched that review since i got the cd, and read a lot on these amps. i was just curious if anyone has one, and how they're finding them so far.

Re: Epiphone So Cal 50

Very good review in the latest Guitar Player. The reviewer wasn't kncked out by the clean but loved the overdrive. Apparently it was designed by some famed amp guru (Belov?) and the board layout was done by Mike Soldano.

Re: Epiphone So Cal 50

A guy locally offered this amp and a Sunn 4x12 for my "Elton John" Stargazer. Going to check it out tonight, might come home with it. And, if I do it definitely needs some mods - a Heyboer OT, and replace all the ceramic disc high-pass caps!

Re: Epiphone So Cal 50

I played one at the MF outlet in KC a couple years back, reminded me of a Mig60. It was beat, looked like it went down some stairs or I might have bought it.

Re: Epiphone So Cal 50

Ive heard good things in the press and the few vids online are good. I imagine they are good amps and just arent flying off the shelves cuz of the name.. Sad, cuz the Jr is hot and the blues twin one is awesome. Ive heard the are great rock amps, but not super high gain.

I almost bought one, but held out due to lack of info. So, would love to hear more.

The one I played last night was actually modded to the brink, so I have no way of commenting on it realistically, plus the Sunn cab was pretty funky, had a blown speaker, and I think the amp was only plugged into one half of it.

I'm pretty sure I just picked up this exact rig in a trade today - SoCal 50 (seriously modded), Sunn cab that doesn't sound quite right. Did you learn about any of the mods on the SoCal? there are three knobs on the back with no labels.

Small world.

No way dude... where did this trade happen? Sounds like the same amp I played and balked at... I don't remember if he gave me any detailed info on the amp mods or anything.

Bay area - I tested out the speakers in the cab with a multimeter, and one of them had a blown voice coil (open-circuit), so the cab was actually at 16 ohms only going through 2 speakers, but was plugged into the 8 ohm jack - probably why it sounded so funky.

I'm really curious about the mods though - there's a switch on the back that I don't get (not the 25W/50W switch), and those 3 mystery knobs with 1/4" jacks.

Either way, I'm probably going to try to unload it - more a blues/country/classic rock amp, and I'm into heavier stuff.
