Epiphone Valve Jr. Transplant

Ok, so a valve junior came up for crazy cheap and I went with it. You guys were right about how loud it is, man o man! I got a modified one though, turns out it still sounds good at practice volumes so I guess I dodged that bullet. However, its a combo and I want to rip out the guts and put them in a head/cab configuration.

Does anybody know anyone who sells empty heads and/or cabinets? I need an empty 1x12 cab for the speaker (hopefully celestion alnico blue) and an empty epiphone valve jr. sized head for the electronics/tubes.

Also, does anybody know how to build heads/cabs? I've run across a lot of free time recently so this is an option too.

Help!!!!

Re: Epiphone Valve Jr. Transplant

also, what speaker would you guys recommend for a 1x12 cab? Greenback? Alnico Blue?

Re: Epiphone Valve Jr. Transplant

Avatar, Lopo, and others are out there. The Epi 1x12 cab is pretty inexpensive and reasonable well built. You would have a hard time making one as well for less. My Epi seems a bit darker than I would like so a brighter speaker (like a blue) would seem like a good fit to me.

Re: Epiphone Valve Jr. Transplant

first of all, thanks!

I have a 4x12 that I'm going to sell to finance all of this, so I think I'm gonna go with avatar - you guys have any recommendations?

Also, I think I'm gonna look for an epiphone head on the cheap to swap the guts into...

thanks again for helping me out while I convert my combo into a head+1x12 cab!

Re: Epiphone Valve Jr. Transplant

Avatar does a nice job. In 1x12's I tend to like bigger cabs. My favorite is a white blonde pine one I custom built to match my white blonde tele using locking miter joints. It measures 23 inches wide, by 18.5 inches tall by 11 inches deep. I tend to like to stay close to that one if I can but that is not so "portable." Avatar vintage is pretty close to that size. But, that is just me. :scratchch

Re: Epiphone Valve Jr. Transplant

I might be making my valve junior into a 1x12 combo soon. What would the head cabinet be worth to you ?

Re: Epiphone Valve Jr. Transplant

I dunno - will it be empty? To be honest I don't know what an empty head cabinet is worth, they're going for about 70-100$ on ebay fully loaded, so I was gonna do a transplant and sell the combo. I don't wanna throw a price around but $35-$45 is the range i'm looking at right now - I feel like that's a fair price but PM me and we can work something out, I'm definitely interested!

Re: Epiphone Valve Jr. Transplant

if you turn my valve junior head into a 1x12 combo for free i will let you keep the empty head and 1x12...:D

Re: Epiphone Valve Jr. Transplant

The combos are not much bigger than the heads. You could just bypass the crappy combo speaker and run a cable to the speaker cab of your choice. Just an option.
Good Luck

Re: Epiphone Valve Jr. Transplant

Guys, to clarify, the Epiphone valve jr. combo has an 8" speaker instead of a 12" so swapping probably won't work out...

Emptypockets, I'll do the work for free, just keep in mind I don't have an empty 1x12 cab lying around so i'll need that too to do the conversion, there's one on e-bay last I remember with a buy it now of $35, but its empty (no speaker)...

Anyway thanks for all the help, I just need an empty head so however I get it doesn't matter to me.
