Epiphone ?

Re: Epiphone ?

Yeah...And those custom qualities, i read reviews about the 1959 VOS against the Standard Epi Les Paul, in the guitar player magazine, and they said that if you changed the hardware of the Epi you'd probably get about 90% of the tone of the Gibson.
.

What a load of bollocks! How are they even determining the value to "tone" Look around at how many people chase after the smallest minutia of tone. If someone cant afford the price or doesnt think its worth it. Thats cool i can understand that. But saying you would probably get 90% of the tone is as retarded as the EVH guys obsessing over the scratches on the quarter thats on frankie.

Re: Epiphone ?

I would say that if you are on a limited budget (aren't we all?) and you find an Epiphone that has the features, color, tone, and style you like--go get it, but budget for a professional set-up by a competent luthier.

A luthier's skilled touch can often turn a frog of a guitar into a prince. And I have a pro set-up done on each guitar--even my Gibsons, so budget accordingly.

When you've had budget guitars for a number of years, you may find that your old instrument is holding you back. A quality guitar can inspire you to write great songs, improve your understanding of the Gdim chord while in the Lydian Mode, cure the heartbreak of cystic acne--and help you find true love in the process.

You'll know when you're ready to take that step.

Good Luck!

Bill

That's totally true! I have a great 7 sevenstring, body and pickup wise, but just the fact it's bridge sucks, it brings me down sometimes.

IDK Edge, i didn't test them. What i meant to say is that the PRICE of the Gibson is not justifiable, quality-wise. BUT not only for the Gibson, for any solid body guitar IMO. (The relic ones, the standard is pretty fair in U$ Dollars)

It takes more than that.

Sincerely,

Someone who's done more than that.

Re: Epiphone ?

I say...forget about the name on the headstock (unless there is a particular brand that you know delivers consistent quality of tone, playability, and finish) and buy the guitar that delivers all of those attributes and that you can afford regardless of brand.

I find very good quality, tone, finish, aesthetics, playability, and cost in Schecters. I haven't tried Agile yet, but hear great things about them...they are certainly priced right and look great. I have actually had very good luck with Epi (haven't had a "bad" one yet, and I currently own 7). I own 3 Fenders, two "good" ones, and their cheapest Tele which is mediocre quality at best. Out of a dozen Gibsons I've owned I'd say three have been excellent quality in every respect (all three were from the 60's), One is very good quality (from 2008), All the rest weren't worth buying at even half the price I paid for them.

Am I an Epi fan? You bet.

Am I a Gibson fan? You gotta look around to get a great one, otherwise...no, I am not.

Thanks everyone

Re: Epiphone ?

Normally I really hate white Les Pauls, but the chrome hardware and the zebra pups look really sharp on that.

Nice one, man. Congratulations and happy new guitar day. :beerchug:

Re: Epiphone ?

Suggestion: 1. Put the chrome covers on the pickups.
2. Convert the black plastics to creme to match the zebras

Re: Epiphone ?

Wow - so much to say....

As was mentioned: Epi's vary. Some bad ones, lot's of meh ones, and some very good ones! But you gotta play them.

Necks vary. I have one that is honestly thinner than I'm ultimately happy with. Thinner than a 60's LP or as thin.

A pair of Duncans will do WONDERS for an Epi of any sort.

The Epi may not be built as well, and may not feel quite the same. But it is a completely respectable and functional guitar. Saw pics of Dave Grohl playing an Epi Custom for a LOT of shows in the early Foo days.

My Epi Classic w/ Duncans sounded WAY better than my Gibson w/o Duncans.

Finally, yes, the initial response was obviously off track, but I don't think any ill was intended. Also, I'll keep a hold of the butt-hurt form, in case you need it for real sometime.

All's well that ends well. Nice Epi. Very zen going for the Studio. Under rated Epi's IMO. very classy. Hope those A2P's sound great in there. I suspect they will!

Well done! Now you're one of us (a dubious distiction at best). :14:

Re: Epiphone ?

Nice score! How does that guitar play? New or used? Give us the DIRT, man! Glad you are happy with it, that's a great axe.

Re: Epiphone ?

Thanks all, She plays great, took me some time to get her set up correct. But worth it. I played a gibson studio today. I dont know. I dont think I would trade her for the gibson. I know thats a bold statement, but it was hard to tell the differance. Lucked out with a good one. :)

Re: Epiphone ?

Glad to see you got the Epi and that you say it's a good one. Saved a whole lot of bucks, too.

Yes, Studios are underrated. They sound and play every bit as good as more plinky LPs.

I, too, never really liked white on an LP, but I have to admit that it DOES look much better on a Studio than a Standard or a Custom. Must have something to do with the lack of binding that helps the white on a Studio.

But really, the most important factors are how it feels, plays, and sounds.
