well i have basically narrowed my search down to 2 guitars, the epiphone les paul standard and the epiphone G-400(which one do you prefer), i WILL be swapping stock pup's for seymours, also what is a better pickup for iron maiden, sabbath-y tones, i am looking at the JB and the Custom custom, thanks.

I prefer the Epi LP custom. Somehow the Epi SG's I played never felt right to me.
I don't know about the CC but the JB is awesome for old metal.

The important thing is, which one do YOU prefer.
Just go to a guitar store and A/B them, see which one you like better in feel. Also when buying an Epiphone, examine the guitar REALLY good before buying, especially the frets.

i have played the les paul previoulsy, it played great, goin in agian on friday gonna give it a proper rundown/inpection, check the switch/controls etc....... i have no clue about the CC either but i have heard the JB in person sounds great, i was just curious about the custom(by the way the frets on the epi are great), thanks.

P.S do you have any clips of your epi les paul custom?, by the way nice bogner :32: , i hear they are incredible amps.

ya the custom is definatly looking much better right now, and with new pup's, damnit i cant wait till the 27th i am so anxious to get my new guitar. :headbang: plus i am gettin a new amp in february, any suggestions?

Thanks, yes it's an amazing amp.
No clips yet, but I'll be recording a band demo next saturday with the LP and XTC. I'll post clips as soon as the mix is ready and pleasing.

As for the amp you're getting, what's the budget and what's your music taste?

musical taste is mostly, like i said before metal like Iron Maiden(my favorite band) black sabbath, rainbow, dio, all that stuff i also play AC/DC type hard rock, as for price range like under 750 canadian, would like to find a good used tube amp but i am not willing to do EvilBay because of shipping prices.

If i had to choose for me eprsonally i would go with the les paul. But you should go with what feels right for you. I think either pick ups will do iron maiden or metal well in general. Both have a fairly hihg output and will do you well.

I have tried the LP custom and the G-400 and I prefered the LP custom. Since you are gonna put duncans you should get new pots and such, I have heard alot about the electronics crapping out on Epis. As for a tube amp, you should try checking out the Crate V Series I bought one and loved it, it has a pretty decent price. I know there is another forum brother that has the same amp I have and he injoys it too. It is very underrated because of the company that makes it, but it is definitly an amp worth trying out.

i have heard some pretty good things bout' the crate but my local dealer doesnt cary em, so basically outta the question.

i'm not an Epi fan but recently i made it a point to try a few... the Epi Iommi signature IMO is impressive, even the default humbuckers were amazing. it gives the clarity & definition which are above average. the other impressive one would be the Boneyard LP, much is due to the genuine Burstbuckers in there which also accounted for the higher list price. :laugh2:

The Iommi looks like a great deal, but I'm interested in the "Boneyard"...stock burstbuckers & better electronics.

As for the Epi's selected, the Customs are a good guitar....never played a G-400. I've owned a Custom LP & currently have a Custom SG.....nice guitars straight out of the box & they get even better once upgraded with pickups & electronics.

BUT....play more than a few; Epi's QC issues are a mess. You can pick up 4 of the same model in the same store & they'll all be very different in sound & especially weight.

Just play as many as you can & get the pick of the litter!

thats because the epi iommi comes equiped with real gibson usa iommi signature pickups

I agree with the aforementioned quality issues with Epi guitars. I had to play a handful of them b-4 I found a good one. Personally, I like the LP-stlyle vs. the SG-style. The neck joint on SG's don't seem as rigid as the ones on a Les Paul. As far as pups go, anything from a JB, to a C5, to a SD-Dist. will do the classic rock/80's metal sound which you are looking for.

I have to admit, I was caught a few times staring at the Boneyard Epi in a local store.

Epi makes some solid instruments, like Gibson, if you get the chance out to try many. My gf's uncle got this Epi Special II that was the best of the bunch. You wouldn't believe how resonant and well built it was and I'm not usually impressed by anything under $500, nevermind the closeout price of $150 ;)
