EQ and loudness

I dont know if I am losing it or if this is a thing with Marshall amps but whenever I get my Marshalls up loud, especially my Jcm800, the eq seems to be less effective. My Mesa and Egnater amps still eq effectively with the amps loud. Any explanation for this?

Re: EQ and loudness

Power ratings of the amps? If the Marshall is a bit lower powered it makes sense (to me anyway) that by turning it up you are getting more from the power section and less from the preamp section-where I believe the EQ operates.

its the way the amps are. fender tweeds do the same type of thing. might be the cathode follower tone stack

Re: EQ and loudness

Marshall tone controls are notorious for not being very effective, particularly the older models. Back when I was playing them the recipe was bass and mid on full, adjust treble to taste (usually about half way).
