How does that Whirlwind differ from the MXR 10 band?

It really doesn't. The Boss EQ-20 I have already does the same thing, too. But that Whirlwind looks cool. There could be some differences in the internal parts, which I don't understand, so I'm doing fine with the Boss.

Im a really cheap person lol. I just purchased the behringer 7 band EQ. Its decent for the price at $25 not the best the world has to offer but it does what i needed it to do.

I'm partial to the Boss EQ with "Sniper Mod". It's a bit quieter than the stock unit.

i read the mxr was not true bypass
the Boss model was not so good i sold it

Man, the GE7 was what I went with and I am sorry. It is noisy as all hell on the frequencies I wanted to boost. The MXR is much quieter,
I don't know which would get you what you need. 5 band or 10 band, but as I've heard the GE7 and the MXR 10-band. I should have gone
with the MXR.

My advice for shopping for an EQ pedal: Check out what's in stock at your local guitar shop. This way you can listen 1st-hand for hiss & crackles. Everyone has different experiences. I have 2 Boss EQs, and I love 'em. Some people complain that Boss EQs are noisy, but I haven't had this problem with mine. As an alternative to the GE-7, people recommend the Danelectro Fish & Chips- cheaper w/ the same features, and some say less noise.

I say it's best to ignore what it's marketed for (guitar, bass, acoustic, keyboards), since they mostly do the same thing. Pick the one in your budget which sounds the way you want & is easy to return if it behaves differently with your gear.

what does the volume slider do on the BOSS GE7 ? a few EQ pedals don't have a volume control. Then there is the number of bands. 5, 6, 7 10. I would think 5 to 7 bands is enough fiddling for most people ! Another one that seems popular is the Joyo 6 band

the volume acts like a level
you can put one of these in the loop of an amp and use it as a master volume

my 10 band Caline has a volume and a gain slider

so you can lower the actual output of an amp ? the Joyo doesn't have a volume or level slider, but some suggest it's quieter than the BOSS

I have the Joyo 6 band. I had a GE-7 for a while, also had an MXR 10 band. The Joyo was (for me) the noisiest of them (used it live and at rehearsal for a year or so), but not by much... it works fine. It isn't great, but it's definitely worth $25-30 if you need an EQ on a budget. They're all usable if you like the frequency bands they have. I was using EQ for bass, and the MXR 10 band, although it was the nicest of the three, wasn't tuned well to do what I needed in the band mix.

I wound up getting a Wampler EQuator, which has hi and low shelving and two bands of sweepable mids, plus an overall boost or cut. The volume knob (or slider) is really convenient for that purpose. Sometimes you have a good EQ curve and just need a little volume tweak. I only use it in front of my amps - no loop on the Traynor, and the VHT has a built in 5 band graphic EQ before the power amp (which I hardly ever want to use).

the joyo doea not have a level control on it
which is why I own the 10 Caline which is Identical to the MXR but for the price

I used it in the loop of my Carvin Belair to tame the volume spike from 1.5 - 2 on the volume knob

as with an tube amp it sounds beter around 6 or 7
if you can stand in the room with it

some volume control in the loop helps with that

and as Seashore said
it works as a clean boost as well
even without the volume control

there are a lot of eq's out there, it really depends on your budget and your needs

This is a super old discussion! Some people I know like to use EQ pedals as clean boosters, in front of the amp with all sliders raised & flat. Around the time this was originally posted, I sold off my ridiculous collection of pedals. Now I play through an Orange bass amp with a parametric midrange control built in.
