ES-335 love..anyone?

Re: ES-335 love..anyone?

I have a Epiphone sheraton ll and for a $600 guitar that thing is awesome. It just has a little more tonal complexity to me than others like the les paul. You almost get subtle overtones because of it being hollow. It just feels more alive and less flat sounding that some of the others.

And with a set of American or European PU's, they're really nice. If you get a used Sheraton, you can do this on a budget and have some great tones.

Re: ES-335 love..anyone?

I just played IMHO the best 335 ever! I have a history with this guitar. Its a 1959 335 Stereo.

The current owner bought it from a friend of mine, who took it on trade for a custom guitar he made (carved solid top archtop Jazz guitar). This guitar was badly damaged in a cargo accident when it was being transported from California to NY. The sides were blown out and a few other body problems. The guitar has fairly new sides and was refinished. All the wiring is original and the neck was not damaged. The current owner had it wired for mono so he would not need a special stereo cable for it (a mistake IMHO). The bridge pickup at one point had some problems, but was repaired and this pickup is without question one of the best bridge pickups I have ever heard. We had many opportunities to A/B this guitar against many others of the same era and this guitar just flat out sounded better. This was the guitar that convinced me that vintage guitars are really something special. To this day it is the best "vintage" Gibson I've played. I almost bought it before my friend wound up with it, but I could not justify that much cash. Man what a great 335. I love mine don't get me wrong, but this guitar is a real special instrument. It was in for a setup, but even with dead strings and the action and neck slightly out of adjustment it was pretty awesome. I was playing it through a Custom made Fender Tweed Deluxe clone (18W). The combination was jaw dropping.:notworthy:notworthy

Howdy,

Sounds like a great "rescue", Bludave. I'll bet that old 335 really does scream through that Deluxe clone! I love my 335.

Re: ES-335 love..anyone?

Howdy,

At last night's rockabilly/C&W gig, I "jumped the shark" by employing a friend's Marshall Bluesbreaker combo for a few raunchy Chuck Berry numbers. "Oh Carol" and "Little Queenie".
I was in Keef Heaven, adopting his rock-pig stances and strutting all over the place, unable to contain my utter child-like enthusiasm. My ES-335 was truly getting it's Ya-Ya's out at unmic'd high volume. Oh man, what a blast! Never played through Marshall before, always Twins or Champs. There..I feel better for sharing. ;)

Howdy,

I wanted to share my enthusiasm by declaring that the ES-335 and a Carmen Ghia are great together! I can't decide which I like more: My 1980 ES-335 or my 20th Anniversary Carmen Ghia head w/ matching 1-12 cab.
This combo has it all: Low-volume chimey cleans, slightly overdriven Ya-Ya's tones and full-throttle "Sunshine of Your love" grind through those SD '59s. Pure fun. Anyone else?

Re: ES-335 love..anyone?

Sorry for the stupid question....but is there a smaller bodied version of the 335?

Re: ES-335 love..anyone?

That ES-339 is a great guitar. Of course it's not an ES-335 or a Lester. It's very lightweight and the tones are great for rock, blues or jazz. Right now I'm gassing for an ES-335 and an ES-175

+1. A full-size 335 is much better, unless you're a jockey. I used to think a 335 was pretty big, but you get over that fast. The big body is so comfortable, and sounds so good. Not at all bulky. And for a full depth hollow body, a 175 is hard to beat. You've got good taste.

Re: ES-335 love..anyone?

You know what really makes me tingle inside? An ES-345.

Re: ES-335 love..anyone?

I've been having BIG TIME GAS for a 335 style guitar and this thread ain't helping. :friday:

Re: ES-335 love..anyone?

I've got an ES-335 style guitar. It's an Epi Dot that I've upraded the pots, switch and jack on. I also installed a pair of Seth Lovers in her. This axe will hang with any 335 any day.

You don't have one? Best move I ever made.

Nope, somethings are more important than getting a 2K+ guitar (gibson cs-336) :disappoin

I've been talking to a guy who might be able to make me a flat top 336. If he can actually make it, I'll post the build here.

Re: ES-335 love..anyone?

i love the resonance i get from my epi es-333, but its just an epi, so you know, you get what you pay for.

In the right hands, an upgraded Epi 335 (like yours) just may equal or surpass the tone of a Gibson 335 in need of a set-up. For a fraction of the investment, it's worth it.

Re: ES-335 love..anyone?

Howdy,

These days I'm really enjoying my 1980 Gibson ES-335CRR. I've replaced the stock "Dirty Fingers" with SD '59s and it's a big improvement. Now I can get my "Ya-Ya's out" through my little '68 Vibro Champ while playing along with Keef, Mick and the guys right here in my living room! : party:
This guitar plays like butter and sounds really big and fat through my 6L6 powered Fender amps ("The Twin" and "Super 112". Both with red knobs and great tone, thank you.). It's a bit heavy at 9 lbs, but those HBers enable me to really overdrive my tubes in ways that are impossible with my Rickenbackers and Fenders. These P/Us are under-rated for clean, and my Fender "The Twin" is good for that. And the sustain? It's there, trust me. Anyone else wanna share some ES-335 love? Climb aboard!

PS: Be sure to include your favorite amp(s) for your ES-335; maybe we can learn a thing or two about achieving some great tones.

My favorite HB guitar I own is my 335 (1985 Dot RI). It has the stock PAF RI pickups in it & I would never consider changing them. They are awesome in this guitar. I bought this used about 17 years ago and would never sell it. It is the tone I hear in my head. I also have a new 359. It also is a great guitar, but the 335 has something the 359 lacks. Although I do like the 359 better then my Les Pauls.

I have a variety of amps that I like to play through. Currently I am using a Marshall 900 50W 2 12" combo with real nice results, I also have a fender Super Reverb & Deluxe Reverb (silverface) as well as a Bogner Shiva & a Komet 60. The Bogner & the Komet are my main 2 amps. I use both A/B'd and it is awesome with any guitar. The primary challenge with the 335 is feedback. At higher volumes and gain I have to be careful where I stand or it can squeal on me some. Just a matter of finding the right distance and place to stand. In small rooms its fine, larger rooms when you are playing a lot louder....... gotta be careful. The Komet & my 335 is tone to die for. I just can't get enough of it.
