Hey guys...

I played this really sweet Epi Les Paul Std..the neck was great, surprisingly slick. i loved it..more than the $3000 gibson custom i played...the epi had more chimey top end which i favored..but that wasn't the only reason..

but then i saw this ESP. but i've never played it..i plan to this weekend

they both get stellar reviews..but from what i can see, the esp ltd offers better hardware?..

i almost saved up for either of those two...give me your insights please(and what would you take?...)

Re: ESP EC1000 vs. Epi Les Paul Custom

I've had an Epi LP Custom & it was a great guitar.

I've never played the ESP, but they come stock with all the things you'd want to change with the Epi (TonePros bridge, tuners, better electronics) & the stock pickups are either Duncans(on the burst, my personal favorite) or EMGs (on the red or black).

SO....................... :)

Re: ESP EC1000 vs. Epi Les Paul Custom

i'd probably go with the esp. The pickups are just way better and i just don't like epiphone too much(had some creepy stuff going on with those guitars in the past)

Re: ESP EC1000 vs. Epi Les Paul Custom

I would play both, and make the decision upon what feels right to you. Here's something to consider...the Epi is the cheaper of the two at $600. If you wanted to do upgrades (pickups, electronics, harware, etc.) you may end up spending $200 or more. The most you would pay for an EC-1000 is about $800 (if you were to get the black cherry finish w/ EMG's) and you wouldn't need to do anything to it (unless you wanted to of course). In my opinion, the EC-1000 seems like a good buy, but if the Epi feels right to you, then get that.

Re: ESP EC1000 vs. Epi Les Paul Custom

actually, i would like the sunburst because of the duncans..so 700 is cheapest...im gonna go to the guitar shop this weekend and play both and decide..

Re: ESP EC1000 vs. Epi Les Paul Custom

i've owned a few epi LPs custom(s) and special edition models in the past (sold all of them) and i got to play and ec1000....the ec1000 is a far better guitar IMO, better hardware and electronics (emgs or duncans) the neck feels better to me, a bit thinner than the epi and the body is a bit thinner and rear contoured. i'd g with the ec1000 for sure of the two.

Re: ESP EC1000 vs. Epi Les Paul Custom

I would go for the LTD comes with duncans has a nice finish. Has pretty nice components like the sperzels. I'm sure that the Epi is a fine guitar but their are still some mods you would have to do, like pup exchange, change the pots and maybe the nut. Also if you don't like the tuners on the Epi that will add more $$.
I think the best bet would be the LTD. I have not tried the EC1000 but I have tried all the 400 series and I didn't kind one I did not like. The only thing that bothers me about all the LTDs, which is a very minor and prefferentual is that the humbuckers are too close together and if I bought a LTD I would have to adjust my picking a little bit.

EDIT: Oh, and diffenitly do not order the Epi. Go into a music store and try it out.

you GOTTA be kidding me.. the EC1000 is 700-800 over there? GEEEZ!

thats a no brainer man, go get the ESP

Re: ESP EC1000 vs. Epi Les Paul Custom

It's no contest. You put the two next to each other and the Epiphone looks like a toy. I own the ESP and it puts most Gibsons to shame, let alone epiphones.

you'd think the $ is going down.. so the stuff that has the price relevant to the $ would go down too.. but nooo, they go frickin up! bastages

Re: ESP EC1000 vs. Epi Les Paul Custom

the low exchange rate of $ to € makes holidays in USA pretty cheap and everething that is illed in dollar wil become a good dea. but stil guitars are way more expensive over here. here the ESP is about 1000€ what woud be about 1350$ which is way more than the epiphone.Go get the esp!

Re: ESP EC1000 vs. Epi Les Paul Custom

During my non-Gibson Les Paul hunt I got to play one of the ESPs.

What everyone says is right on- they're exceptionally well made and well put together. The components are top notch. The only major problem I had was that the neck was thinner. For me thatw as a complkete dealbreaker; I NEED a big neck. The Epi I had (birdseye top) a few years ago had a really nice feeling neck on it.

If you're in Korea why not check out the Les Paul clones from Edwards, Greco and Burny? They're a fantastic value; I own two! And the cost of both of them together is less than what I paid for my actual Gibson Les Paul.

Re: ESP EC1000 vs. Epi Les Paul Custom

I have an ec-1000 vintage burst. The duncans are great. The sperzel locking tuners are awesome. The tonepros bridge is great and helps oput with sustain and great intonation. The quality is top notch. Its very comfortable to play. I was bought an Epiphone Les Paul Ultra and hate how light it was, how muddy the pups were and didn't like the satin nech. Also the upper frets were hard to play. I sent it back and Bought my EC 1000 and I live it. Been my main axe for over a year now. Solid. Dependable. The only drawback in the 23 and 24 fret can be a ***** to reach sometimes, but i rarley play them.

Re: ESP EC1000 vs. Epi Les Paul Custom

IMHO, the EC is a better choice if you can deal with two major differences:

1- the neck is thinner on the ec (as stated by skarey) and has 24 frets.

2- the ec is a thinner guitar too, meaning the epi will have more wood and more mass. (the good thing is that the ec is therefore lighter and less of a brick to strap around your neck).

I've said this many times: if you're looking for a Les Paul: buy a les paul. I dunno how close to this you wanna get, however, if you think you'll find a les paul in an EC (unless you're going for the archtop ones with 22 frets), you won't. You may get closer with the epi (although I'm not sure about the use of alder in their model).

With that said, for me, the Ec was a far better guitar for the money. It has been my regular guitar for 5 years now and since I've bought a Gibby classic, it's a 50/50 relation between both.
