I got this guitar yesturday...i LOVE IT, the thing is a beast, the EMG 81's give me sound that i was missing w/ the EMG HZ H4's the guitar is is beautiful. theres a couple things i have to get used to about the guitar though. the guitar is Neck heavy, so the neck tilts down and i cant figure out a way to better even out the balence. maybe you guys have some ideas on how. the other thing is im used to playing a 24 fret guitar and this one has 22 so it's gonna take some getting used to.

i guess the point of this post was to A) review the guitar and tell you guys how pleased i am with it and B) to possibly get some tips on how to deal with the gutiar being neck heavy, or do i just have to get used to it and eventually i wont really notice it.

Perhaps position the guitar so you're holding the neck at a more vertical angle? After you let it go down past a particular angle it becomes uncomfortable. Make sure you have a nice comfortable strap too, otherwise it adds insult to injury.

I have this problem with my KH-1. The guy at ESP recommended relocating the strap button. Images of drilling multiple holes into my guitar, trying to find the right location filled my head.

I went to GC and bought a roughly textured Levy's leather guitar strap. It had a kind of asphalt texture to it. I simply reversed it, with the smooth leather side facing outwards and the textured side against my shoulder. Viola! No more slipping guitar neck!

i have an ex-351, i just got used to it so the neck heaviness doesnt bother me anymore

neck heavy? with such a chunk of wood? with the diamond plate finish?

where's the strap button located?
you should move it closer to the neck, if the heaviness turns to be too big

i was suprised about the neck heavyness too, it's a solid mahogony body with an actual metal diamond plate attatched to it but it's still neck heavy.

i have a really nice Levy's strap, the thing was 50 bucks but i convinced the guy at my guitar shop so sell it for $25. i was thinking about getting a strap that would b rough to add grip but idk, i think i might jsut get used to the neck heavyness, my friend got a RR3 that had the same problem, he's had it for like 2 weeks and is pretty much used to it now.

dude.. WTF!? solid mahagony with a real diamond plate on it? neck heavy?

can you post a picture of the back so we can see the strap button placement?

That's the most unusual thing I've heard... A metal plate should be heavier with a mahogany body than a neck!

im pretty sure its the strap button placement. its on the side on the upper area, like where it would be on a LP or something.

If you put the strap button near the back of the neck like on a Gibson Explorer or SG, it might correct the neck heaviness issue.

even better.. place it right at the neck joint, as close to the neck as you feel comfortable, that should fix the neck heaviness

Exactly, my thoughts... It's quite impossible. :saeek: What about the overall wheight of the axe? Is it too light? It cannot be. Mahogany is HEAVY like hell, with an Explorer shape and the mass it comes with it should push your tummy hard...






Re-placing the strap button will help as advised before.

I was curious about the neck-heavy issue, as I am actively looking for an LTD-400/Gibson Explorer. I'll keep this in mind. :)

So how easy is it to reach the 22nd fret?

it's not hard, just takes some getting used to from when u've only played a 24-fret guitar. i dont think it's as easy to reach as it would be on LP or a different 22 fret guitar. but when you think about it an explorer really is more of a "hang it low and riff" guitar. the EX400 though really lacks the cleans a passive pickup would give you. that my only complaint, i have to play on the neck pickup to not have a slightly distorted clean. but that can b fixed by a simple pickup swap...just some other things to keep in mind when looking at the explorer shaped guitars

Thats such a cool guitar. I am going to get a LTD viper-400 soon.

You should do what the guy from Atreyu did to his EX.......cover it with green reflective tape. :laugh2: It looks awesome.
