ESP M-1000 vs Ibanez RG470FM

The Cynic

New member
I'm currently looking to get another guitar.
I'm basically a bassist that can play guitar and only a little experience with guitars.
ie: wood, brand, pup selection etc...

I'm currently looking at.
ESP M-1000 and Ibanez RG470FM.

I have an older Ibanez RG270DX (basswood body/bolt on neck) with
very old Seymore Duncan pups the previous owner installed.
I love the Wizard ll neck and it has a great sound, but I'm looking for something different.

The newer Ibanez RG470 (basswood body/bolt on neck) comes with Infinity pups and
they aren't good for metal IMHO.

The ESP M-1000 (alder body/neck thru body) comes with active EMG 81/85 which is
what I'm already leaning towards in terms of pups, but I've never played an ESP.

Anyone know if the ESP necks are similar to the Wizard necks in terms of being thin and fast?

Any recommendations?

Yes, they are similar but narrower. You're going to like them, I think.

To be honest with you, I think the thinnest Wizards and Super Wizards are ridiculously thin, uncomfortable tone killers. Wizard II's are fine by me but unpopular. They are 2mm thicker which is enough to save my hand from going numb. ESP necks never gave me that problem either.

Don't worry about it, pick the higher spec guitar which is the M1000. You'll most probably get used to the new neck real quick.

Re: ESP M-1000 vs Ibanez RG470FM

I currently play an ESP LTD EC-1000, and I love it to death. The necks arent as thin and fast as an ibanez, but they are very comfortable to play on. The pickup matchup there is also a personal favorite for a good metal tone. I think the ESP will make a very solid guitar for what you are looking to do, but I cannot say anything for the ibanez, i have never played it

Re: ESP M-1000 vs Ibanez RG470FM

The RG470FM has a mahogany body. The LTD is going to be a better guitar, but you might find the RG more comfortable. You'll want to play both. You can always change the pickups in the RG.

The ESP LTD M-1000 ( Deluxe is on the headstock: see the pic)
http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/M1000MSW/

And I also made a mistake. The ESP comes with two active EMG 81's.

Also: I checked with Ibanez directly.
They said;
The Ibanez is Basswood sold in America.
The Ibanez RG is only availabe in Mahogany here in Japan, and the prices here are crazy at around $1300 to start.

At least that's what they said.

Re: ESP M-1000 vs Ibanez RG470FM

In Japan things a pretty different, I went over to the site and there's way more stuff there than on the other websites.

Is the RG you're talking about this one: http://www.ibanez.co.jp/products/page13_jp.php?&data_id=199&color=CL01&cat_id=1&series_id=30 ?

I suppose then they're about equal.

However you said that it comes with Infinity pickups. And on those I agree with you, they're pretty bad stock pickups.

Neckwise I think the ESP LTD necks are just slightly wider and more substantial than the Wizard necks. I think it would just be best if you tried both out first.

Re: ESP M-1000 vs Ibanez RG470FM

Thanks Brian... That is a SWEET looking guitar... Too bad I wouldn't know where to that that particular one. You wouldn't know where I can get one in America that would ship to Japan would you?

Thanks Hairmail.
Yeah, that's the one I'm looking at, but the prices here are beyond reasonable.

I'm heavily leaning towards the ESP and just swaping out the active EMG 81 neck pup for an actiive EMG 60.

But since I've got your attention:
At the moment I'm recording direct. I use either pedals or a POD XT through a fairly good tube pre.
Eventually I will be running a Mesa Boogie Mark V Combo and a 410 cab.

My writing style is a bit avant garde as far as metal.
Try to think; (early) Rush, King Crimson, Black Sabbath meets King Diamond, (early) Voi Vod, Watchtower, (early) Metallica, MegaDeath and Yngwie Malmsteen. It's just a bit more eclectic, but very heavy and often very technical.

Am I going in the right direction?

The RG470 was basswood, this one is Mahogany (with probably a thin layer of maple on top.)
