ever have a GAS flashback? well, here's my final bassman post

Looking for Real Life
alright, christmas & tax season are commin up, i won't be able to afford a cyber twin se, HOWEVER, I will be able to afford either a ab165 bassman & 2x12, or a fender hot rod deville. So i need you, my forum bros, to help me decide. As I've mentioned before i'm getting my ideal tones on my hotrod at low volumes, at higher ones, i kinda lose it, the speaker is helping, but still not quite there, I'm losing a lot of bass response &, well, everything typical. So, it's either a late 60's bassman, with a 2x12, loaded with 2 eminence red white & blues (probably closed back, and its real similar to a vintage 30 so think of those for reference), or a hot rod deville, with max headroom tubes, and the same 2 speakers.

The differences I'm looking for are:

expected bass response

how the bassman cleans differ from hot rod ones

how they each voice pedals (sounds crazy, but hot rods voice them totally different than twins, and I'm not a fan of the way twins do)

expected headroom

and just an overall kinda a/b ing of the 2 amps. Also let me add that if you've not played a deville or deluxe with a v30, its really similar to the way it sounds with the volume at like 1.5

The Hot Rod Deville will be ready to rock right out of the box.

The Bassman will be a much much better amp with far superior hand wired construction...but it will need to be modded for great performance as a guitar amp.

I've played both of these amps, and although I don't remember enough to give you a side-by-side comparison, I can say that I was far more impressed with the vintage bassman's I played. Then again, I also have a thing for vintage gear, so maybe my opinion is a little biased.

I say Bassman

Quit asking which amp is better than another and go play them and make up your own mind. The only person who can decide if an amp sounds good or not is you.

Folks perceive sounds differently....and from past experiences you've managed to prove that what others hear in an amp you don't.

Just play the damned things, pick one....or another....or something...and be done with it....

Somebody stop me if I'm wrong, but could it be that he's asking questions because he doesn't have access to either of these amps and wants to get round-table opinions from everyone before spending hard-earned money on one?

Never mind.... stupid idea i know. what on EARTH would compel someone to ASK QUESTIONS? on a FORUM for god's sake?!?! :smack:

He had access to a shop that had a new Twin a week or so ago.....

I'd be more inclined to believe a shop would carry the HotRod amps and Bassmans before they carried something like a Twin.

I think the difference is, as someone put it, to $hit or get off the pot.

Eventually you just got to take the plunge and drew's done a fantastic job of heming and hawing over the different amps. He's asked some great questions in the past and no doubt learned alot. But it sounds to me like it's an issue of just getting out there and letting his ears make the final, and always right, decision rather than asking other folks opinions. He seems to be shopping for what other folks suggestions are and I've seen him let down with the picks made in the past.

His take on amps is unconventional; he refused to just listen to how the amp sounded and instead made his judgement on how it reacted to a $100 pedal. pedals are used and picked to enhance the sound of an amp, not the other way around. He slammed the Twin Reverb Reissue without even really cranking it up, which a Twin needs to do to sound good.

He needs to use the forum less and his own ears more.

I feel for him...I made some terrible gear picks at a young age and lost some serious cash on the deals. But even without the benifit of all the sage wisdom found on here I never made a bad decision when I closed my eyes and let my ears decide what did and didn't sound good.

Re: ever have a GAS flashback? well, here's my final bassman post

the only bassmans i have access to are a bassman 10 & a bassman 50

no ab165, no blackface. I was impressed with the 10, but not enough to drop the cash for it

and the reason i checked twins with a certain pedal is I'm looking for something to run at the same time as my hotrod, that pedal had a very chunky tone by nature, and with the twin it just kinda sounded like...crate buzz. I tried the twin with 2 other pedals & well, same deal. It's just not for me. By the way, i turned it up to 6, and still wasn't happy with the tones, and despite the store owners, i played with it at 6 for a good 10 minutes tweaking it.
