I got another new Guitar, played it and it sounded pretty good, and felt amazing, and the deal was unbeatable so I took it. Paint looks ehh, which is why he was getting rid of it....

Can I do anything crazy with this??

Re: Ever Hear of GTX?

It wasn't to bad, I didn't get to use it on my rig though so I can't be sure. When I get it home tomorrow I will post what I think it needs. From using his rig (Line 6 Spider II:banghead:) I think it was to dull sounding. Could have been the amp though.

Re: Ever Hear of GTX?

can you take a better pic of the headstock/nut? it looks like it's got a lock after the nut, which seems kinda moot to me. other than the locking trem, seems like a great find! cool paint job, cool control layout, with a couple new pickups i bet that thing'd scream:D

Re: Ever Hear of GTX?

What does it sound like unplugged? A fresh set of strings and a setup usually helps most guitars. If it sounds good unplugged after that, the electronics can be changed to make it into a tone machine.

It looks like the Kahler style lock that mounts behind the nut. Jackson jt-6's were like that in 87-88. It's actually kinda comfy.

I remember playing one at a piano store(don't ask) in the late 80's. Awesome feeling neck. Was as nice as my San Dimas Charvel in feel. Never plugged it in though. Had a holographic checkerboard with a slanted bucker.

Re: Ever Hear of GTX?

GTX guitars were a division of Ovation and were made in Asia. They were an entry level guitar aimed at metal wannabees. I have seen a few and I thought they compared with the likes of Westone from around the same time period. I used to see them a lot at Schmitt Music and I think Schmitt was their sales channel. I think they might have been part of the St. Louis Music family like Crate and Washburn.

Sorry I didnt respond, was out, heres the head.

I gotta go get a new set of nuts, the guy lost them.

It sounded really nice unplugged, I liked it.

Re: Ever Hear of GTX?

i have one, with two singles and a humbucker. i stripped it and repainted it a white/green burst, as well as covering up the two single coil holes. i never really used it much, but they sound pretty decent for plywood guitars.

Re: Ever Hear of GTX?

I've had one. I had the 33 series in the weird marble eerie dess type finish. They were imported by Kaman in the late 80's and early 90's. Pretty decent guitars for the money. Don't see many floating around anymore.

Re: Ever Hear of GTX?

Correctamundo on the KAMAN corporation, of wich Ovation is a division as well.

Looks like a Hamer Chaparal copy, IMO.

I happen to own a GTX 36 - Les Paul Custom Black Beauty. I also own a vintage 73 LP. All in all, it's a solid guitar, as good as any basic Epi Custom.

I say hit it!

Re: Ever Hear of GTX?

Hmmm, I went to Kaman's website and looked for Hamer. It was there; but I didn't know that Fender bought all the Kaman music companies. I guess that explains Gretch...

I had one EXACTLY like that, except in black. The body is plywood, so be careful if you want to strip it. I'd suggest just sanding the existing finish with 320 grit and using it as a primer base.

Re: Ever Hear of GTX?

congrats! on a serious note, I used to see these all over and still pop up in the hock shops. Although they dont usually take in the really 80s looking colors anymore it seems.. they have a good feel for the price..

Re: Ever Hear of GTX?

The guy just offered me Some Ibanez Pickup and EMG for free? So I'm going to toss those in. For some reason, it's just humming now, I don't know why, and I can't find a wiring Diagram for it. Anyone got any ideas?

Re: Ever Hear of GTX?

yeah, I almost mistakened it as the Washburn EC models with the recessed cutaway. They produced the 27-29 fret model a while ago. The finishes on those guitars were crazy like that one.
