Evergrove has two new tracks up!!!

They're up on our MySpace... www.myspace.com/evergrove

Recorded and engineered by our very own Virtual_Kevorkian, who did a damm good job, by the way. MySpace screwed with the compression and the high end a little bit (argh!!!) but it's still pretty good sound quality.

Any guitars/amps/gear questions, ask and Jeff or myself will pop in an answer. I hope you guys like the two new tracks! They're called Above It All and Take It Easy.

Re: Evergrove has two new tracks up!!!

Pending Brenno's permission, I'd not be against posting a high-bitrate mp3 of one or both of the songs.

Re: Evergrove has two new tracks up!!!

That stuff is professional.

And how in the world do you not have Garbage listed as an influence?

Good job to Jeff on that, and Breendoo on the playing. Sounds great guys.

Thanks! Glad you like the tunes.

Garbage? Never heard that one thrown at me before but I do like the band. Are you hearing an influence in the sound?

For sure! Garbage has a chick singing, and it's kinda hard kinda soft like yours. I agree though, it's more of a stretch than say, The Cranberries.

Re: Evergrove has two new tracks up!!!

I take it this means this is the final revision and you guys are ready for WAV's? :laugh2:

Oh yeah.

Ok cool, thanks for the input. I dunno if Liana likes Garbage, I'll have to ask her.

What is your rig on "Take It Easy?" Especially in the intro.

Do you get free tickets for providing the moniker?

If we're ever in his town or if he's ever in our town, hell yeah he gets free tix!

My rhythm guitar for Take It Easy consisted of the neck pickup of my Music Man Silhouette Special (neck pickup, stock single coil), fed into a Fulltone OCD, into the clean channel of my Carvin Legacy head and fed through a 4x12 Legacy cab with stock V30's. The controls on the Fulltone were Volume - 11 oclock, Tone - 12 o'clock, Drive - 2 o'clock, with the LP position selected on the switch. The tone controls on the amp were all at or about 7, presence switch off, volume at 4 or 5.

The first 1/2 of the solo is actually the Legacy and a 5150 II blended together. We recorded the solo through one amp and then reamped it through the other one... the second half of the solo is only one amp (forget which one, probably the 5150 II) and I used the amp's overdrive channel, the OCD, and a Crybaby 535Q w/Fasel. The bridge pickup of the same guitar got used too, but that one's an SD SSL52-1 hot.

I recall Jeff using an SM57 and an AT3035 simultaneously on the amp for mics. I also double-tracked the rhythm tracks.

Ya like the tone? :D

Re: Evergrove has two new tracks up!!!

2nd solo was 5150II, correct. It was reacting better to the lower sweep of the wah, at the time, IIRC.

Replace NT-1 with AT3035 and you've got it ;).

Alright cool, wasn't sure about that second mic either, thanks for correctin' me.

Re: Evergrove has two new tracks up!!!

i thought it was a very good recording. to be quite honest, however, i thought it was kind of cliche musically. IMO, the lyrics were kind of cheesy and it sounded rather glam as if it was meant to be an instant radio hit rather than a genuine work of art. the tone is good, but for that kind of music maybe there's too much distortion in the rhythm too.

Wow, I think thats the first time I've ever been accused of being cliche, cheesy glam, or trying to write a radio hit, especially considering I'm not even close to that level of popularity in the local scene yet. :laugh2:

Above It All took maybe 5-7 minutes to write the lyrics and another hour or two for the music, though I did completely rewrite the bridge as I thought it sounded awful when I stepped back and looked at it. Take It Easy took a little longer, maybe a few weeks in a gradual process for both music and lyrics. I wasn’t really trying to be cliché or glam or write a single or anything… I just had a few nice riffs and progressions that I paired up with some lyrics I had to go with it. It sounded catchy and I dug it and everyone else I showed it to seemed to like it so I kept it… nothing really forced or contrived in the process of those two.

I guess we all hear music differently. Thanks for your input. There's always room to improve, especially at this stage. I’ll try to create a genuine work of art next time. ;)

gee, you don't take criticism very well. i'll try to remember to just tell you everything you do is golden and just pat your ego next time. trust me dude, i get my share of criticism. you're probably right though, that's really not my type of music anyway.

the recording was great though. did you do it or did someone help you with the studio work?
