Every been tempted to just settle for one high-end guitar?

Re: Every been tempted to just settle for one high-end guitar?

The over fret binding is an 'upgrade' simply due to the time it takes to do over and above binding before fretting....its a major PITA.
.

Just for clarification, when you say "over fret binding", are you talking about the little fret-end nibs that Gibson do on their higher priced models (standards, customs and so on)?

I think it looks nice, but I can be a sloppy player and need all the fret real estate I can get.

Hey! That was my pinch of salt.

I don't know where this thread has gone because after one page I lose interest. But I take back what I said earlier. There's no way I can sell my stuff. I can't do it.

Good. Selling a Tele and a Les Paul for an SG? Ah, man… I could never recommend that. No matter how nice the SG is, it's still only going to be an SG. (I kid! I kid!) Honestly, if the result of your decision is going to be that you'll be playing a guitar somewhere, you'll be happier than dweebing around in gear threads probably makes most of us. I just played my DK2R for a while, and though it really needs the strings changed, it was pretty sweet. Rock on, brotha. :headbang:

Sucktacular is now part of my everyday vocabulary. And it's coming up in my auto finish for my phone.

Re: Every been tempted to just settle for one high-end guitar?

I tried it once, sold everything and bought a Gibson Historic '59 RI, immediately regretted it. The LP was awesome but I couldn't have just that one guitar. I sold it soon after purchase and bought a Warren DiMartini Snakeskin Charvel...still a high end guitar yes, but I had a lot of money left over. Of course, it didn't last long!

Re: Every been tempted to just settle for one high-end guitar?

I think it depends on your music.

Many people will play 1 guitar only. They will quite happily fiddle with tone/vol controls for those small changes to suit and rely on the rest of the band and the tempo to take the songs where they need to go. Those people (damn them!!) are very adept (and much physically and spiritually richer as a result) at getting something they like to hear.

I'm one of those curious people who thinks 'what would x wood/pickup/guitar combo sound like?'. I also have about 10 'ideal tones' that I'd like to get.....all very different to one another.

For my tastes I need a lot of guitars...strats, teles, LP's, semi-hollows, SG's, PRS etc

And my thoughts on what differentiates top-end......wood consistency.

Re: Every been tempted to just settle for one high-end guitar?

The issue I have with this is far from my own.when my first girl was born sadly I had to part ways with a 84 explorer and an 86 strat.I loved both these guitars.as soon as i was in a better place financially i attempted to replace them.Through this process i realized that guitars are like people.individuals.irreplaceable.I bought a brand new "upgraded" 2011 american strat.sadly it did not have the vibe or the sound of the 86.If it feels good in your hands and sounds the way you need it to,ignore the name on the headstock.sound advice.Currently have a japanese LP copy retrofitted with an sh1 and JB,a Jackson soloist,a korean LP copy that is excellent other than the pickups and an early 80's squier with a lace holy grail loaded pick guard.Pretty freakin happy but always want more.:-)

Re: Every been tempted to just settle for one high-end guitar?

It's not so much the name on the head stock I have a hard time ignoring as much as the shape of the head stock. For whatever reason I've come to consider the head stock of the Tele and Strat to be an integral part of the package and get turned off by copies that are forced by law to have a difference head stock shape. I think Leo Fender though that head stock looked good and he had an eye for geometric balance. Any old random head stock screws up the balance.

The other thing is that I associate head stock shapes with companies, and the company's special head stock is a mark of pride in their product, visible for all to see. So when you have a Strat copy with some funny headstock on it like ESP or Sammick, it's like they're saying they take pride in their imitation guitar products, which is weird to me. If the head stock were the same shape but the name Fender were replaced with ESP or Sammick, it would be understated enough to not draw attention to itself, and also retain that intended head stock shape.
