Everyone’s telling me not to buy a 12u Rack...

I would ditch the Furman for a regular shallow rack mount powerstrip and put it in the rear rails. Would also ditch the Korg tuner and put a boss tuner with 3ft cable on top of the rack when playing. This will give you a 10u rack option and remove 20lbs (using SKB rack case). Put wheels under the rack and it will rolls easily almost everywhere.

I have to say, I can't believe how heavy those Furmans are...they add a lot of weight to a rack. I am sure there is a better solution for power out there.

For my portable (not my studio), I have a 4u SKS made of that whatever-it-is tough ABS plastic or what have you.

Front:

ADA MP-1
Alesis Quadraverb
*space*
ART SLA-1

Back:

Furman rackmount 1u PSU (it fits fine)

Estimated 30-35lbs

Minus the two (it's a stereo rig) 1x12 cabs, footswitch, cables, Voodoo Labs 4x4 (powering a couple items) and secret weapon Two Notes Torpedo CAB M, of course.

I mentioned before, but you can save a ton of weight doing SS power amp vs. tube.

I had a 12 back in the 90s. It was tricky getting it in some cars. I would have to move the front seat forward to put it in the back. Hey if it fits your needs and you don't mind moving it, go for it.

So from 11lbs to *something less* for the Furman, then the tuner is less than a pound right now. Going from a 35lb 12u to 10u you are estimating at 10 lbs lighter?

I think I see now, the 10u Roto molded SKB is 25lbs, hence the additional 10lbs of savings.

Yes, 10 pounds saving from your 12u at 35lbs and 10u SKB at 25lbs. The tuner is lightweight but taking 1u space so you need 12u instead of 10u. My 10u fits easily in my car trunk. At around 65lbs this is not heavier than a 100w Marshall head, and easier to move if you put wheels.

Don't need a Furman at 11.5lbs, there's a bunch of 1u 8-10 outlet power strips you can put on rear rails.

I understand, thanks.

My bro's former '78 2203 was 42lbs, while my '88 2555 is 47lbs. I used to have a 64lb beast of a H&K Triamp, not that was a PITA to move (though easier than a SVT).

What is even worse about the tall racks, is that they get even more unbalanced the more you put in them. They are front heavy.

I had an 8sp rack in the 90s early 2000s that was replaced by a boss ME-50 and I never looked back. Rack is so retro.

My 4u rack is about 30lbs, with a Furman and 2 Echoplex Digital Pro loopers. It is a pain to carry around even at that size.

So, you put about 15lbs of lead ballast in the bottom rear of rack. Problem solved.

For guitar rack gear in general, I also don't like the awkward dimensions.

The deep cases will overhang when placed on top of a guitar amp or cabinet.

They really don't belong anywhere other than big custom enclosures. By that stage one's rig is practically more like a server.

While I used many rack units over the years, I realized when I got away from them, how terrible the ergonomics of a rack is. Bad for cable management, bad for re-ordering things, bad to just see what is going on in the back of one.
