Everything You Ever Needed to Know About Speakers

Re: Everything You Ever Needed to Know About Speakers

Thanks so much! I'm trying to learn about this so I can get the right cab for me. :)

Re: Everything You Ever Needed to Know About Speakers

Any Fender freaks out there.....is this statement (from the voodoo site) true.?
......... "Leo Fender was notorious for running 8ohm speakers on 4ohm taps in his older amps".

he actually did the opposite, too, allowing 4ohm loads on 8ohm taps in smaller amps like Deluxes. Prob could've dedicated an entire article just to Fender impedance mismatching.

He was using a 4 Ohm Speaker.?

internal 8ohm + external 8ohm = 4ohm total load on 8ohm output.

Larger amps with 4ohm output taps could easily handle a pair of 16ohm JBLs (8ohm total load)

Sorry, i am even more confused now.
When you say "internal", are you talking about the OT.?
Likewise, when you say "external" are you talking a speaker.?
Thank You

Re: Everything You Ever Needed to Know About Speakers

Internal: He's talking about the speaker(s) inside a combo amp.
External: He's talking about add-on speakers.

Re: Everything You Ever Needed to Know About Speakers

That's weird.
So Fender ran 2x 8 Ohmm Speakers // ...into an 8 Ohm OT...not a 4 Ohm OT ...from the factory.?

If you used an external cab along with the internal combo speaker, then yes. It's tough to say exactly what came out of the factory some 40 years later, but i've seen Vibroverbs with 8ohm 15"s on 4ohm outputs, and Dual Showman heads with 8ohm cabs on 4ohm outputs. It's a testament to great design and quality components, really. The same can't be said for other manufacturers.

And these were old speakers/cabs, that looked to be the original Fender set-up.?
God knows Fender used whatever tube charts, panels. knobs might be available.
This is the first i have ever heard they did the same with speakers.....certainly possible...though i would think in limited numbers.
Very interesting indeed.
Thanks

Re: Everything You Ever Needed to Know About Speakers

Also goes to show that with a well made amp, reasonable mismatches aren't such a large concern.

They didn't just use anything available... a solid output transformer can usually handle a mismatch of half or double it's rated impedance, this is all in the article. Fender understood this and used it optimally.

Re: Everything You Ever Needed to Know About Speakers

You do not understand what i am saying.
Not talking about the OT they used.
Talking about the weird things Fender did that betrayed what model of amp "you" had. Like BF panels with SF Knobs...wrong tube charts...wrong grill cloth...etc etc.

Re: Everything You Ever Needed to Know About Speakers

The tweed bandmaster is a good example of a mismatched impedance straight from the factory. It was running at 2.66 owns IIRC and the TF was for 4 ohms.

Re: Everything You Ever Needed to Know About Speakers

Not sure if that is a "good" example. :)
An amp with 3 speakers is not exactly what we were talking about. That would be a mismatch in anybodys amp.....they were probably not going to custom wind an OT for one, weird speaker scenario.
Leo was a guy that used a 4 Term pot because he got a good deal on them. :)

Re: Everything You Ever Needed to Know About Speakers

If you ran two 8ohm speakers in series with one 16 ohm speaker wired in parallel to them, that would be 8 ohms total. Doesn't seem like a mismatch to me, as long as the amp has an 8 ohm output.

Re: Everything You Ever Needed to Know About Speakers

But they did not use two different impedance speakers.
Your way, while it would offer the correct Impedance Match, there would be a lopsided Power Match among the speakers themselves.
4 to 2.6 is the correct way to present a mismatch for the OT, and it spreads the power evenly.
