EVH 5150 III EL34 50w !!

Re: EVH 5150 III EL34 50w !!

Want! Love my 5150III 50 watt but with is had separate volume and gain for channels 1 and 2. I know I can get it modded for this, and might still. But this this coming out, I don't know!

I'm trying to decide on this as well.....

Re: EVH 5150 III EL34 50w !!

I called my local shop and the price is a $ 100 more than the current evh 5150. So basically around 1099.

Re: EVH 5150 III EL34 50w !!

Good point but how many 5150/6505 users "know" that these amps have 2 channels? Even fewer have used the first one ever. I'm guessing that the least used item in peavey's history is the footswitch for these amps...

I pretty much only use the first/green CH of my 6505 & I use the boost function of my footswitch all the time!!!

Re: EVH 5150 III EL34 50w !!

Ive never been able to play thru any of the EL34 loaded 5150 IIIs. How and how much do they differ tonally from the normal ones?

I figured as soon as the 100 watter came out a 50 would be close behind.
Funny, the write up points out that his signature sound came from EL34 driven amps.. I always found it odd that his PV and EVH amps always came with 6L6s

I have had one for about a week. I am using it with an EVH 1X12 loaded with an Electrovoice EVM 12L speaker (though in this photo the cab still had the stock 30 watt celestion) and am very happy with the way this amp sounds. It is loud and clear. It did take some time to get used to the interaction between the bass controls and the resonance but now that I have its golden. They also bias them very cold so getting a proper bias on them really helps and opened mine right up.

Great amp, highly recommended

From initial reports, the 50w EL34s blue channel is nothing like the 100w 6L6 or EL34 version. Totally different voicing. The 50w EL34 Blue channel is more akin to an old Marshall that was hotrodded. It has all those Marshall mids, presence and kerrang! Not modern sounding like we're used to from the EVH amps. This amp is much closer to Ed's classic tone. The new EL34 clean channel is a real winner apparently. Better than the 100w & 6L6. The red channels are practically the same though...a Lava spewing Chainsaw.

As for Peavey's 5150 having 6L6s, that was done because the amp was designed to be more in line with a Soldano type circuit rather than any Marshall.
And the EVH using 6L6's, I remember reading Eddie say they were simply more stable and dependable. The EL34s would end up drifting, dying or failing more often. The 6L6 just worked better in the amp during testing & development.

Ive been looking at this amp, mainly because I need a hard rock amp that runs EL34s and is 50W. I'd also be interested in the 6L6 version but I think i'd try to run it on 5881's b/c I like those better.

Kind of a dumb question... can you unscrew the EVH stripes on the front?

From what I've heard, there's quite a difference in blue channel voicing between the 50 and 100 w 6L6 models as well.

Re: EVH 5150 III EL34 50w !!

Hi sorry to going off topic but couldn't find any thread related to my query, So I am hoping that someone here could help me out.

I had just bought an EVH 5150 III 50 W amp from ebay and on turning it on at the first time, the fuse blew off.. I had the fuse replaced and powered on and it blew again. It was my mistake that I blindly trusted the seller and now I am struck with a faulty amp head. This is my first amp purchase and it turned out to be a bitter experience. Please, help me how to fix this issue.

FYI I live in a place where there are no amp repair shop for miles. So I have no other option that you seek you help and fix it my self.

. Probably a bad power tube. Maybe a fried resistor on the tube socket. Doubt it’s anything serious. Shipping might have shaken it up a bit and caused an issue with one of the tubes. Usually it’s tubes with a tube amp. May not be the sellers fault at all. A warning: sometimes, if you’re lucky, you can just replace the tube but if there’s a fried resistor now because of a bad tube the new tube will fry as well until that bad resistor is also replaced. Eventually you’ll need to learn a little more about the workings of guitar amps so you can at least be comfortable looking inside the amp and recognizing these issues and deciding for yourself whether you c@n fix it yourself or need a tech.
