EVH 5150 LBX and Vintage 30 question

Re: EVH 5150 LBX and Vintage 30 question

Yes, V30's are tighter, but not because they have a heavier magnet. There's a lot more to a speaker than the magnet size. V30's are louder and have less speaker breakup, but they haven't got the warm woody low/low-mid content of Greenbacks. I used to have V30's mixed with G12EVH's (I replaced the EVH's with CB H-75's and now Relic 30's) in my cab with the ability to select either. I have experience with both.

Take that as a grain of salt. FWIW, I disagree about H30 Anniversaries being warmer than V30's. IMO, they're the brightest speaker Celestion makes. JMO.

I'm not that sure. Greenback had harshness in the mids and high mids I didn't care for. V30's were too stiff and lacked mids.

G12H anniversaries I have now are just perfect. Balanced all the way, well defined low end (though not stiff) and clarity in highs G12M lacked. They do might have more highs, but they're on wider spectrum and are clearer, so it sounds much smoother. Best speakers I've tried.

Well, we hear stuff differently, then. To me, V30's are all mids. Especially high mids, lol.

But yes. The current Chinese Greenbacks have a certain ratty character to the high mids (which the Heritage/EVH's don't have). I agree with that. I like it, personally.

I don't mean to say H30's are bad speakers. I like them too. I just think they're really bright because I feel they have the same ratty character as G12M's but with some added sparkle which the H magnet adds. Each to his own.

The thing about V30s, is they take a long time to break in. I'm talking years. And that's only if you play them loudly during that time. They sweeten and soften up over time though. Playing new V30s, yikes! I've been there. The gnawing, intense mids, sizzling top end, stiff bottom end.
I won't buy new ones again, and they're my favorite speaker lol! I have a set that are about 15 years old, and a pair that are 10+. I also use a pair of Veteran 30s, but they seem to come out of the box sounding like they were gigged for a few years. Those are about 10 yrs too.

V30's have mids, but they're stiff and contained with high mid spike. They lack the wide midrange G12 speakers have.

Actually it was made in UK Greenback from Silver Jubilee combo I had.

Jeezus, stiff mids and tight bottom. That's what every metal head wishes their cab would sound like out of the box!!! Well, until it loosens up to no mids and tight bottom...

Re: EVH 5150 LBX and Vintage 30 question

Don't EVH cabs have Greenbacks or at least something in the same ball park? Maybe you can try a cab with greenbacks or buy a greenback-like like speaker to try in your current cab.

Re: EVH 5150 LBX and Vintage 30 question

Hey, this tread is not much current interest to me anymore, but it doesn't hurt whomever likes to share their ideas, of course, There are very few 112 and 212 greenback cabs, probably due to power handling considerations. Nothing I see that is both reasonably priced and good quality. I surely would get the EVH 412 if I could afford, but whether that suits my apartment situation is doubtful. When I say greenbacks I mean M Greenbacks.

MIUK Greenbacks with an EVH sticker slapped onto the back. And a lower price tag.

Re: EVH 5150 LBX and Vintage 30 question

Don't discount Chinese Celestions. They use the same tooling as UK ones to make them. They may sound different in some aspects, but they do not sound poor. They are still more desirable than American made Eminence speakers on the used market.

FWIW, I owned the EVH 2x12 cabinet with my JVM and that cabinet sounded terrible. The cabinet dimensions are too small and the 70th Anniversary speakers were incredibly bright and beamy with any volume above bedroom levels.

Not only was everything moved to the China plant, but Celestion still uses the same parts. The only difference is where the speaker is assembled. Fun fact, the China plant has always had a lower defect rate than the UK plant.

Scumbacks are an excellent choice as well.
