EVH Custom

Anyone here played with one of the EVH custom pickups? Im thinking of putting one of them in the bridge with a Pearly Gates or a Custom Custom for neck.

What did it sound like? How does this combination sound to you?

Oh yeah i play with an Epiphone g400.

Re: EVH Custom

You wouldn't want to use an EVH in the bridge with a CC in the neck. The CC has almost twice as much output, which is why it's normally used as a bridge pickup only. If you put a low output pickup in the bridge and a high output pickup in the neck, you'd definitely have problems with balancing the volumes between the two pickups.

Re: EVH Custom

I have an Seymour Duncan EVH in my musicman axis sport
First off, as rspst14 said, whatever you do dont put a CC in the neck with an EVH in the bridge. In fact, personally i doubt a CC in th neck would work in most guitars whatever is in the bridge.
Anyway, as for the EVH, it is a nice pickup. If you are familar with EVHs tone, it is very good for the tone of the first 2 albums, though . , and unless you were using a non-master volume marshall, the tone is no more like EVH than any other PAF type pick up.
Having said that, it has a very good sound in its own right. It has that warmth, with slightly more mids than a normal PAF and that extra clarity in the top end. Basically, it has an A2 magnet and has the warmth of any A2 magnet pickup, but the clarity of an A5 magnet pickup. It sounds excellent clean aswell. Whether it is worth the extra money im not sure. Its not 'better' than any other PAF type pup (eg 59, pearly gates etc) just because it costs $160. It is just slightly different, and you may prefer it to a 59, but you may just as well prefer the 59.

Re: EVH Custom

Hmm so what would be a good setup with an EVH in bridge? Maybe a Pearly Gates in the neck? Looks like the output would be too high there though. Or should I just forget it and go with maybe a Pearly Gates and a Custom Custom, or a Pearly Gates and a JB?

Re: EVH Custom

A PG would be good. What makes you think a PG neck is too high in output?? Its 7k ish while the EVH is 9-10 ish IIRC. Thats a pretty good match actually.

Re: EVH Custom

Hmm, maybe Im just getting confused by their tables. Is the output list the "DC resistance" thing? If it is, then if I get an EVH for my treble pickup I better get a PG, Alnico II, Seth Lover, or '59 to keep the outputs well set up.

Probably go with the PG, Alnico II, or '59, the Seth Lover one is a closed coil and I'd rather go with a pair of Zebras.

Re: EVH Custom

Yes, the PG, Alnico 2 or 59 will all be fine.
I have an alnico 2 with my EVH in my axis, and it works pretty well. IMO, the Alnico 2 get an ultra smooth and ultra warm and pretty balanced tone (no part of the frequency range seems to stand out), but the 59 and PG are a little more dynamic - the 59s slight lacks of mids gives it a more open sound than the alnico 2, and the PG has an upper-mid edge to it (which isnt my style). I will probably be swapping out my Alnico 2 for a 59 soon

Re: EVH Custom

I wanted to put a CC in the neck too because on this silly tone-chart that duncans' website has everything is a little goofy, JB's EQ looks scooped, output bars aren't even reliable supposedly based on the size of the bar the 59, SL, & PG are louder  And the jazz has about equal output....... Right?. I hate the tone chart, you have to obtain almost all your info here on the forum, but be careful when you get advice because not everyone nows what they're talking about. Evryone's reply sounds good here though
