Re: EVH Frankenstein Humbucker

Call me a dumb*ss. I just pre ordered one of the limited edition autographed relic ones.

All because EVH personally autographed it.

Re: EVH Frankenstein Humbucker

Are they the same pickup though?

Same spec, yes. The Relic is an instant collector's item. And it probably has more time spent on the cosmetic aging than any other pickup we make. It's the same as the OEM pickup we sold Fender for the Frankenstein relic.

The production version is the same pickup, without the cosmetic aging.

Re: EVH Frankenstein Humbucker

after those 500 are gone, we can't CS order it?

and what about the wolfgang pups, are those SD's or are those fender jobs?

as for the cosmetic aging, is it merely external, or is it also internal wiring aging as well?

Re: EVH Frankenstein Humbucker

I dont know about the wire type, but this new EVH sounds alot like the Duncan Black Back. To me, my black back feels like it has a degaussed A2 in it. I have compared the ole' "touch a piece of metal to the pickup and feel how strong the pull is" test. I have compared this with my CC and my PG. It is weaker. Also, the blackback DCR is 14k.

Plus, based on Ed roman's site, the Blackback was what was in the old Musicman EVH's. Originally made by dimarzio, then made better by SD.

Anyways, I like its tone. Its strange, but the blackback, at the same gain levels and amp settings, has less distortion and gain than the PG and the CC. Must be the degaussing, and the mismatched coils?

Wait, so this is the pickup that was such a secret in the $25k Frankie? Fender took the legal shackles off?

No, Fender is buying them from Duncan and reselling them.

Where did you play one? The Wolfgang's are barely out but supposedly Fender is making those pickups. I have yet to hear a Fender bucker that is worth a **** so I wouldn't be completely stunned if they were outsourcing them.

Ed Roman needs to be banned from the music industry. He puts so much fiction and half truths on the net its mind boggling. PRS tossed him from their dealer program for his shenanigans. I would take anything he has to say with a massive grain of salt

Keep an eye out for a sudden increase in the number of used '78 Models becoming available. I have a feeling lots will sell those off to get this one. I could be wrong as well.

The pickups in the MM EVH were basically an Air Norton in the neck and somewhere between the Air Zone and Tone Zone in the bridge. They were not Black Backs, not even close.

I dig degaussed A5's but I'm not so sure about degaussed A2's.

Re: EVH Frankenstein Humbucker

I own a quicksilver, with SD blackbacks in it. Yea, it is true, we should take whatever he says with a grain of salt.

Does anyone know if the new EVH Frankenstein has mismatched coils?

Re: EVH Frankenstein Humbucker

Holy crap!!! Those relic'd/autographed ones are $399? Wow!! I love ya Ed, but not that much....lol

Re: EVH Frankenstein Humbucker

I have an EBMM Axis- and played the Fender Frankenstrat. The EBMM pickups have a midrange hump which seems common with alot of Dimarzio pickups- it excels at overdrive, high gain, but the mid hump kills a possible good clean tone. It nails EVH's F.U.C.K. tone, and can easily do all earlier EVH tones.

The Fender Frankenstrat nailed VH1 tones, had a rawer tone, kinda like a P90. It had the "real deal" EVH tone, as compared to the EBMM, which seemed like a high end copy. It was rawer, and not as refined as the EBMM Dimarzio pickups.

Re: EVH Frankenstein Humbucker

Is the production model a limited run or just the relic? Also, why is the production run 149.00 compared to a custom shop order of 160.00?

Because SD isn't the company selling them. EVH/Fender is. SD is just the Mfg.

Re: EVH Frankenstein Humbucker

I think I'm just going to have to get a magnet degausser from Stew-Mac and have at it w/ the CC I just got last week... way cheaper than plunking down 400 bones for the Ed signed one.

Still, it looks cool as s&%t!
