Re: EVH Frankenstein Humbucker

Actually, a 78 and an EVH shoot-out would be interesting to do in the bridge position in the same guitar, even though they have radically different output curves...would be interesting to see not only which would nail the most EVH tones, but which would be the most versatile over all, EVH tones not withstanding...:scratchch
Having said that, I think each would be useful in its own right...depending on the application...;)

Re: EVH Frankenstein Humbucker

I heard one in an EVH art guitar this afternoon. I completely fail to see what the big deal is.

I do a pretty good VH impression and got closer to EVH tones on my Suhr DSH loaded Tom Anderson Classic than anyone playing the relic pickup loaded EVH guitar could.

Re: EVH Frankenstein Humbucker

Basically yes. Over time magnets will lose their charge or exposure to certain things will diminish the magnets strength. Seymour does this to replicate the aging process to alter the pickups tone.

LINDY FRALIN Myth #3
PAFs sound better because the magnets have weakened - Guitar magazines articles in the past have reported that the ageing of the magnets over 40 years has changed them and produced a better sounding PAF. However, magnet manufacturers report that these Alnico magnets only lose 0.2 - 2.0 % of their strength over 100 years. It's not weakened magnets. Beck, Clapton, Page, Gibbons and the other PAF guitar players made a bunch of great music with these instruments in the late 1960s when the pickups were only 10 years old. If the ageing story made sense, 1970s Gibson humbucker pickups should sound wonderful with 20+ years of ageing, but they still exhibit less warmth with more high-end than PAFs.

Re: EVH Frankenstein Humbucker

Is this new pickup potted at all?
I just put mine in and at loud volumes it squeal like no tomorrow.

Re: EVH Frankenstein Humbucker

Its not the wire that does any aging, nor the pickup by itself. Alnicos loose their magnetism from all sorts of stuff like getting hit, temperature changes, oxidation, interacting with other magnetic fields etc. So aging *is* a factor. Though, getting pickups aged for creating sounds they produced when they were new, is indeed an interesting train of thought :scratchch.

But back to evenly voiced pickup; if I'm aiming for the 1984 sound and do have the nessessary amps and guitars, what pickup should i get? I'm getting a 78 but that's not going for the EVH guitar that I'm fantasizing about.

When I spoke to the tech at SD, he told me that if you have everything else (wood body/neck, amps, eq, effects, etc.) that goes with this pup (78') that it gets you that much closer to the sound...but you have to play similiar too...makes sense.

Sammy Hagar jumped on EVH's rig at a sound check and in an interview said he couldn't play on it at all...so what does that tell you.

Re: EVH Frankenstein Humbucker

mac -- The 78 and EVh are both designed to be bridge pickups so you may not be getting what you're looking for in the neck. Try scoring a Music Man EVH or PV Wolfgang neck off eBay, or maybe go with a SD 59. For the brdige, I recommend trying both to see what you like. What woods are we talking here?

Re: EVH Frankenstein Humbucker

...sammy isn't as good as ed at guitar? :friday:

Well that is probably speculative and varies on one's personally knowledge, taste, and opinion. For those that know and play guitar (rock), EVH changed the way people play guitar much like other guitar greats have and will continue to. But part of it is also the environment for which a particular style can flourish.. which was the beginning of L.A. rock scene (VH owned it..and later everybody wanting to be in a band had to have a Charvel and a Marshall) that was very much the vehicle to allow that style and success...just like Seattle was in 1989-1995 for grunge...Kurt Cobain is not a really great guitarist, but will be remembered for a very long time...and he played guitar..I'm sure there are thoso who say he is a really great guitarists because the point of grunge was not to sound like a Hair Band...there are grunge fans that will consider him the best guitar player ever for that...after all he did come up with the riff fo Smells Like Teen Spirit.

But the point is just because one person sounds good on their rig...doesn't mean that another person can go play on the same rig and sound good. The reason why is because it is personalized.

Poison doesn't sound the same as Ratt and they both used JB pups in their guitars...nor does Jake E. Lee's tone with Ozzy...and him and Warren DeMartini were roommates...with Warren joining Ratt after Jake left for Ozzy.

First off ,the pup in the charvel evh art guitar is NOT THE SAME PUP! The art series have a Fender custom wound 16k alnico 5 pup that is ONLY AVAILABLE ON THOSE GUITARS. It is Not the same as the pup in the 25k charvel frankenstein strat.
Second! Before you make the statement like you made it would be VERY SMART to get the facts straight First!

Woah... lay off the caffeine.

Ed could pick up any guitar with any pickup in it and sound like Ed.

I could pick up Ed's guitar and sound like me playing Ed's guitar.

The sound is in the hands period. Gear will only get you close, and the rest is in the player.

LMAO! How did you know? I really should cut down to just 1 pot of folgers a day!

Re: EVH Frankenstein Humbucker

I still dont understand why everyone is trying to copy Ed's tone? Yes he "had" a great tone, but cant you guys man up and just go out and find your own sound?

dont know about others that bought the franky pup but i am not tryin to cop his tone i just think that it is a great pup and the 5150III is a great amp to me. The pup gives me a nice P.A.F type of tone and i like the way it feels under my fingers. Fyi, neal schon and dave gilmour are my main influences more so than eddie but i share a lot of the same tastes as evh with gear

well see im the same way. My 3 biggest influences are: EVH, Slash and Angus Young. I admit, I tried everything I could for a long time to copy each of their tones. After I dont know how many times of trying and failing, I realized that I will never be able to sound exactly like them because Im not them. So I started taking each of their sounds and started using them as a bases to get my own sound. Like I like: the articualation Angus has with his sounds, that just straight up nasty, dirty blues rock sound that slash has, and that signature crunch eddie gets. I took bits of each of the things I liked best of those three tones and just put it all together to "my sound."

Re: EVH Frankenstein Humbucker

Got a duncan 78 i bought from n-schon and i love it. The 78 and frankenstein have a similar tone but the 78 has a output more similar to the screamin demon. I like it a lot more than the lynch demon. The frankenstein replica is the best one of the group though imho.

Re: EVH Frankenstein Humbucker

Just cloned the EVH Frankenstein Humbucker in every detail inside and out.
