EVH guitar - but who's gonna play it?

Re: EVH guitar - but who's gonna play it?

and i do think this is just another publicity stunt designed by some suit to make some cash...

Everything, that has ever been sold, ever, in the history of man, was a publicity stunt designed to make some cash.

Re: EVH guitar - but who's gonna play it?

The key problem here is it isn't actually the real thing.

Exposed wiring, not rout covers, damaged finish, etc, is all great if it's the original thing. It has history and meaning. In a replica, it's just meaningless.

Re: EVH guitar - but who's gonna play it?

it is made for the die hard fan that can afford a piece of the history.

It's not a piece of history.

It's a replica of a piece of history, it has none of it's own. You can't buy mojo.

quite a few of us EVH fans over the years have tried to make copies of the mans axes... god knows i wrecked a few axes doing some of the EVH Stripped paint jobs.... If i was a rich dude i'd own one of them $25,000 ones, and i'd have the Yellow and Black Charvel, and i'd have a few custom 5150 copies too...

but i'd also have every Pete Townshend signature model i could find too...

sick i am..

Re: EVH guitar - but who's gonna play it?

I would rather spend this money on a Fender's custom shop reproduction of YJM's "Duck."

Re: EVH guitar - but who's gonna play it?

I read about a luthier who does a Frankenstrat replica, complete with the 1971 quarter and every other bit of minutiae, for about $2000. I was reminded of it because, like the write-up at the link, he makes a big deal about the quarter being accurate.

As for the "well, even if you took it to a bar, everyone would just expect you to do VH stuff", issue, keep in mind that as regarded and recognized as EVH and his gear is amongst axe-slingers, the majority of bar patrons wouldn't even recognize the real Frankenstrat were you to show up with it. In fact, most probably wouldn't even know what "EVH" stands for.

And I also wonder what the actual Frank would go for if Eddie put it up.

I think the original was perfect for EVH. For him though. And IMO, the copies aren't really in the spirit of the original, even if they're very close. Because the original wasn't a high priced copy of somebody else's guitar.

It's fine for collectors though.

But I wouldn't even buy a black Strat either, because it's so identified with Eric Clapton. So the EVH guitar is out of the question. It's not like a want a completely unique guitar or anything.

I'll admit that I'd like to own a copy of that "The Fool" painted SG, but I'd have no posible use for it. And I can't play guitar like anyone who's ever owned it anyhow.

Of course a "Blues lawyer" with some cash will buy them as an investment. Someone who can play, loved VH in his youth and is treating himself for a life of hard work.

In fact, playing out with that is stupid, it IS an investment. It's like buying a Ferari or Lamborghini. Only idiots that win the lotto would buy one for a daily driver, it's meant to be driven/played on special ocassions and kept in mint condition.

Re: EVH guitar - but who's gonna play it?

This is kind of a two part question:

1. This is a really cool collectible, but would you spend $25,000 on it? Even if you could afford it, would you play it, or just display it? Seems like spending $25,000 on something to display would be a waste... All that detail would only matter to a guitarist, but I don't think it was made for guitarists. So who is it made for? Rich guys?

2. If you did play it, would you play it live? Wouldn't you feel obligated to play VH tunes on it? Thats what the audience would expect...

Just wanted to point out... Dave Navarro has NO problem playing his on stage, I'd bet he doesn't even play one Eddie lick on it either.

I was waiting to see who would be the first pro player to use one of the Frankie's... i figured it would be Zak Wild first... He has some of the Charvel versions of the EVH in his collection

Does Zakk cover the stripes with a target?

Does Zakk cover the stripes with a target?

no.. at least not when i saw photos of the Charvel in the studio with him i think in Guitar World magazine from a few years ago... It was the Black and White paint job... in a quote he said Ozzy bugs him about having a strat around but it's Eddies strat so it's still "bad a$$"

Re: EVH guitar - but who's gonna play it?

My opinion on this:

If I had the dough I would definately check it out, and if it sounded/played real good to me I would buy it, and use it. Could be my main guitar if it is that nice, to me it's just another guitar and i'd handle it just like any other axe.
Only if I had the money and the guitar I wouldn't care about 'historical value' or whatsoever. I'd pay for the craftmanship and tone it provides, if it's worth it to me.

Guitar's ain't no mona lisa's to me, you know.. I buy them for the tone, and to use it like they should be used.
