I recently bought an Edge Pro for a Jem project I am building. The stock block is tiny. Does the stock sound wimpy? How bad is it really?

The stock block is made from pot metal, so any brass block (or any solid milled metal) will be an improvement.

Update for me - my dealer says that they got my replacement black/white today. After they do their thing (inspection and setup with different strings), they'll be shipping to me.

Looking forward to seeing what JMH is so jazzed about with these guitars.

Get yourself a Killer Guitar Components brass block, makes a HUGE difference over the swiss cheese stock block on the Edge Pro.

I hope they're putting EVH or at least Dadarrio strings on it- just because I switched to EB Cobalts which were too stiff- the stock strings were nice and slinky! The stock setup was ultra low too right out of the box- though I suspect if they sit around they'll need a setup

When the PRO, (edge that is) arrived last week it reminded me of the hottest woman ever. Size 6, Pettitte, massive mellons and Japanese of course.... and then the make-up came off.... aaahhhhrrrrrrr......

Just an update.. The EVH Strings, which are repackaged D'Aaddario, lose tone in about a week, so Ill be going back to my clear tones.

I just installed the KGC Brass Claw.. On a note, stock Floyd springs don't fit on the claw, you gotta use the vintage raw strings.

The KGC claw does change the tone, making the tone a bit warmer and deeper. Tapping comes by alot easier as the guitar seems to resonate better, it has cleaner cleans and works better at high gain. It's a subtle improvement, not as drastic as a big block, but an improvement nonetheless

Unplugged, the guitar does get louder and resonate more with the claw. The neck vibrates and resonates on my hands more, as does the body- very similar to my PRS stop tail


I also pushed the claw up to the body since the vintage raw springs have less tension, and I wanted to avoid using 3 springs

I have to add- that block isn't stock- it's a Tungsten block

Awesome, those KGC ones make quite a nice improvement on the tone, and the lug for the ground wire is such a nice addition. Brass is a pain to solder to as I discovered using a Floyd Upgrades one.

Did you do all these different changes at the same time, or setup the new claw exactly as it was before, recorded the changes, and then screwed it all the way down?
What you describe sounds exactly like what you get for tightening down on tremolo 'springiness'.

After tightening the claw all the way, I loosened it so that it was 1/8" away to maintain proper spring tension. It sounded the same, so I decided to just tighten it all the way.

The reason I tightened the claw all the way down were the raw vintage springs. They have a lower spring tension. I wanted a smoother feel from the tremolo, like I feel on Ibanez Edge trems. The stock Floyd springs have a higher tension.

My guitar came with 2 Floyd springs. There wasn't enough tension when I replaced the 2 Floyd with 2 Vintage steel, I had to use 3, which defeated the purpose of the lighter tension springs. So by tightening the claw down all the way, I get the correct spring tension while also having a much smoother tremolo feel. With raw vintage steel springs you have to tighten the claw another 1/8" to equal the same string tension

I just ordered the body of the striped EVH loaded with pickups/trem... I'm going to see if I can find a compound radius neck more like my Jackson SL2HT than the EVH Striped. I may possibly replace the trem with a stoptail at some point. I've played this particular guitar at stores through Engl, Mesa, and Marshall amps and I really like the different tone that it gives. I'm primarily a JB/59 guy and this was a different tone that I could definitely use.

Quick questions: What would be the best way to make this into/have a floating bridge? I would love one of these EVH Series Guitars (red/black/white) but I don't like how it doesn't have a floating bridge. Thanks

Raise the floyd but that will raise action.
To counter that you could shim the neck pocket but that process is a bit of a PITA

IMHO you'd be better off buying something like a Charvel pro-mod or desolation.

So you couldn't take something out or get a different floyd rose system? Like take the D-tuna off or anything? Move the block? I just really want this guitar but I want it with a floating bridge haha.

Just another update- I just upgraded the trem springs to Raw Vintage tremolo springs, just to see if the hype is true.

The stock Floyd springs, on all recent Floyd's, are extremely stiff. The Raw Vintage are much softer and bend easier.

I removed the 2 stock Floyd Springs. Since the Raw Vintage are lower tension, I had to install 3 of them. I guess you could use 2 and just screw the claw in all the way like EVH did, but I didn't want to mess with it yet.

Even with the 3 installed, I get a much smoother response on the Floyd, just like I remember playing one of the first year Ibanez Jems when they first came out in the 80s.

Tone is surprisingly improved, Warmer and clearer sounding than before.

My next upgrade, which Im skeptical of, will be the KGS milled brass trem claw

Is your trem floating or did you manage to get it flush with the top of the body?

The trem comes stock sitting flush with the top of he body, though it is tilted back just a hair- not quite as flush as my EBMM Axis came, but very close.

Exactly. It's a replica of a VH guitar, why would anyone expect a floating bridge?

FWIW, the neck profile is a thin D, not a Charvel C.
