EVH Wolfgang Special/Frankenstein/Striped Series

Re: EVH Wolfgang Special/Frankenstein/Striped Series

limited edition vs regular. maple top over basswood vs just basswood. I guess that's kinda about it.

Re: EVH Wolfgang Special/Frankenstein/Striped Series

I think only 100 striped versions of the Wolfgang special were made, that's why. The price is artificially high, if got one of them they were in the $1200-$1600 range but they were all snatched up.

You can easily get a $1,000 and striped it yourself and it would be more authentic

Re: EVH Wolfgang Special/Frankenstein/Striped Series

I think the striped series has just one humbucker whereas the Wolfgang limited has two humbucker pickups.

Re: EVH Wolfgang Special/Frankenstein/Striped Series

I've been recently trying to find more info on the different Wolfgang Specials (MIM, MIC, MIJ) and I'm having a tough time getting clear answers. So for you guys that own/have owned any of these variants, which one seems to be the best overall? Should I even bother with an EVH Wolfgang Special or just track down one of the USA Peavey Wolfgang Specials? They seem to all be within the same price range on the used market.

I had a mij wolfgang special, it was a fantastic guitar. Played great, and the neck had an amazing feel too it. The mij ones are better than the mim ones, and the prices the last time I checked were pretty good on them.

So the vintage style frets don't feel too bad? I was really hoping to get something with stainless steel frets, but I was also hoping for jumbo. Are these as small as, say, vintage style Stratocaster frets, or a little taller? I want to be able to really do some cool tapping and harmonics, which I tend to have trouble with on small frets.

If the guitar is set up properly, vintage frets are no problem, I have a Clapton Strat that came with vintage frets and ultra low action and it plays like butter

The few MIJ wolf gangs I found in stores came set up poorly with medium to high action, and with the flat top The guitar just wasn't comfortable at all. The Mexican made ones so far all come set up great and IMO play better

How do the USA Peavey Specials compare to the EVH Specials? Am I better off getting one or the other?

Sadly, poor setups for in-store instruments are all too common.

I liked the feel of the small stainless steel frets. Made playing it a breeze. I did find sometimes that my hands would end up in the wrong places because i could barely feel the frets as I went over them haha, but that's probably just because I'm a bad player

My playing isn't advanced in my opinion either, so I can't really judge any instrument on how fast it can be played or anything. Lol. I'm still mostly rhythm, but I'm pushing myself to get better at lead playing as well. I guess that's why I'm feeling like the Wolfgang is a great tool to have at my disposal. Those things seem like they could play themselves. :)

They do seem to play themselves at times. When I had that guitar, I could pull off some licks I couldn't on any of my fenders or anything else, and I attribute the neck to that haha. The pickups to me left something to be desired, but hey, to each their own!
