They are loud as hell, reated at 200 watts and have little to NO cone breakup. They are also heavy as heavy as a bucket full of bricks. I will be dead honest, I don't care for them at all...I found them stiff and lifeless with almost no personality.
Im sure then within a few posts someone will pop up that likes them and claim they they are the greatest speaker ever but for me I just don't dig them...I also have an EVM 15L in an oringinal (special order) MK I Boogie that I had for a while and disliked it as well...

As for the EV/EMG comparison...I like some EV speakers but the EVM's are just not on that list...FWIW, I really dislike EMG's too...I have never gotten a good sound out of them before but if somebody else does more power to them!

I had a pair of the EVM12Ls when I had my rack rig. As stated earlier, they are a bit lifeless. They did okay with clean tones, but I always felt like I was missing something from my tone. Not a bad speaker, and they can handle TONS of power 200 watts or something like that.
All in all, I think they might be okay for a POD setup but that's about it.

i used to love them when i had a set back in the late 80s / early 90s ... i had 2 1x12" bag end cabs loaded with them ... i thought they were wonderful but HEAVY as all get out ... in fact, i was able to sell them (gently used) for what i paid for them because they had stopped making them for quite a while and they appreciated ... one thing i liked about them was that they sounded exactly the same no matter what volume levels that i used them at ... i think you'll like them alot with the fuchs - lotsa TGPers report them to be a fav speaker for their fuchs ... they are not a vintage-y sounding speaker - guys who like old school tones probably wont get on with them well ...
i'd get another set of them in a heartbeat if they came with a roady or if i was only playing at home

I've read that about the Fuchs users, which is what interested me to begin with.
A local guy was selling a pair & I thought about checking them out.
Thanks for the comments fellas...maybe I'll see if he'll let me demo them for a day or 2 :dunno:

I might be mistaken, but there are two EVM12L models currently in production. There is the 300 watt Zakk Wylde model, and the 200 watt EVM12L Classic.
edit: Here it is...the Classic! :smokin: A read of the ad copy mentions a design that is a bit diff from the 12L's of old. I hope this does not become some sort of "vintage is better" issue among the fans of the EVM12L. :smack:
With ebay EVM12L's going for upwards of $120 plus shipping, $195 including shipping for a brand new one is not a particularly a bad deal:

I used to use them, first a pair in a Marsh all JMP 2203 combo that got stolen. I replaced that with a JCM800 2203 with a closed-back 2-12 cab.
Neil Geraldo used JMP 2203 combos with EVM12Ls back in the Benetar heyday around the 2nd & 3rd albums. That's where I got the idea to build mine.
I wouldn't call them lifeless. They're more hi-fi than a lot of guitar speakers. They're good for effects, a lot of people with rack rigs use them.
These days, Ted Weber makes a 12 in his high power series that supposedly sounds like the EV. Probably give you much of the same vibe for less $$$.

I've been using my EVM12L for 28 years now in a single 1x12 sealed cabinet (built it myself) and I like mine. Had a lot of speaker cabinets ... two 4x12 altec lansing the biggest ... 2x10 JBL cabinet the smallest except for this one. I can run at bedroom volumes and get good sounds and I can hang with the 4x12 cabs on a stage ... I get similar tones that I'm satisfied with in both situations ... so I'm a fan. Mics well if slightly off-center.
They are heavy ... the 1x12 cabinet pictured is 48 pounds (I think) but is built like a tank.
All this talk makes me wonder if I should try something else just for a test. Would like to have my 2x10 cabinet back (built just like the one pictured) and put some a Weber 2x10 mix in it. Maybe some day.

EVM-12Ls are not my favorite speakers in the world. I feel exactly like TGWIF does on them and I think he nailed the tone. They're a bit on the lifeless side and the little to no breakup means they sound best for clean applications, overdriven tones through them just don't sound right to me. Good luck if you have a 4x12'' with them, your chiropractor probably makes out pretty good.

I have to be clean guys...I am not dogging these speakers, in fact a lot of guys really like them but to me and for me they are just not my idea of good speakers...
Also, FWIW, the Weber Michigan is NOT an EVM12L type of speaker...it is based on the older EV SRO, which other than being an EV has NOTHING in common with the EVM series.
Like I said the EVM speakers are (to me) lifeless and very bland...I like a speaker with a signature soinc footprint of it's own to go with my amp...with the EVM speakers I feel like Im playing an amp through a set of speakers, with a good set of Celestions, Jensens, Webers, Fanes, etc I feel like the speaker(s) become part of the amp...I just don't get that from EVM's. Also, they are rated at sucj a high ratting (200-300 watts) it takes massive amounts of power to really get them breathing good...
Good for some guys but not for me...

Makes me wonder how I can be so satisified with one rig for more than 25 years? That's really a lucky break. I've had a lot of guitars and amps ... really nice ones. Fenders, Marshalls, LPs, Strats, 335s, SGs, Teles, etc.
I was always really picky ... then in '78 I bought the Boogie and built the 1x12 EVM cabinet. Two years later ... I found the '80 Yamaha SA2000. I've been set ever since. That rig and a cable have done everything I want ever since.
I can still be picky ... worked a couple of project guitars in 2006 ... spent a lot of time on pickups and wiring. They ended up really nice.
But ... Yamaha>Boogie>EVM12L ... and I'm comfortable. Kind of cool when you think about it. :smokin: Pretty lucky too!

Of the EVM topic for a minute...I love that SA2000! I have a very early 80's SG2000...amazing guitar! I liked it stock but I did swap the pickups a while back but it still blows me away everytime I pick it up!

Man I had a red sunburst SG2000 and this SA2000 in each hand ... I wish I'd have bought them both. Talk about heavy ... that SG2000 was heavy and sustain for days. I liked the SA2000 because it had a slab of maple down the center ... made it really versatile.
I kept the SA2000 stock ... Alnico 5 and they measure 8.3k (neck) and 8.8k (bridge). I was afraid I'd ruin it! What kind of pickups did you put in the SG2000?
