Evolution in bright mahogany guitar?

I just picked up a Floyd-equipped neck-thru Schecter with a mahogany neck and wings and ebony fingerboard. I'd like to try an Evolution in the bridge. this guitar has the usual tonal qualities of mahogany, but the neck-thru construction really adds some brightness. would the Evo be too much in this axe on the high-end? ice pick highs?

thanks

Re: Evolution in bright mahogany guitar?

It wouldn't be too high-endy at all. In fact, I'd be more worried about it being too dark. I loved the Evo neck I had in my old C-1 Stealth.

Also, the model is a set neck... Schecter's never made a neck thru with a floyd besides through the custom shop.

Re: Evolution in bright mahogany guitar?

DSS 100% is right. Many people consider the Evo as very bright and maybe even harsh, but that's pretty far from the truth imo. The evo is more of a screamer than a singer and of course it's more focused on the highend but unless you don't put it into an all-maple guitar there shouldn't be a problem. my experience come from a bolt-on,maple neck, alder body, floyd equipped Jackson DXMG which should be good bit brighter than your axe and the evo sound perfect balanced in there. Neck model could even be a little dark in your schecter but since you want the bridge position, there shouldn't be a problem.

Man, we need pictures! I LOVE Schecters!

Re: Evolution in bright mahogany guitar?

The ebony would probably be adding to some of the guitars brightness. Post pictures! high end schecters are sweet.

Re: Evolution in bright mahogany guitar?

I tried an Evolution in my korina bodied, maple necked floyd strat- it wasn't bright enough, I had to0 get a Bill Lawrence L500XL

Re: Evolution in bright mahogany guitar?

Agreed with all of the above.

The Evolution isn't necessarily bright, and its EQ is fairly balanced.

However, there is a very "present" upper-midrange spike, which helps cut through, but can be harsh on some peoples' ears (mine included...sometimes).
Makes it seem bright.

Combined with the high output nature and ceramic mag (very tight!), the Evolution tends to sound very "in your face".
Play clean, or be mercilessly punished.

Dimarzo's description is very good.

Evo=

I didn't like it in mellow or bright basswood.

I loved it in a super bright mahogany wing, maple neckthru, fixed bridge explorer.

so true... i saw both my Fiancee and the second guitarist of my band struggling with the Evos and both had their problems with keeping this pup clean. It's the most unforgiving Pup i know so far but cool nevertheless.

You got that right! Evo is punchy and will not hide your flubs. Works best in fixed bridge setups. Not as good in a tremolo setup or with basswood as you've mentioned.

+1

Fixed bridge with the Evo, all the way. Or a trem that's backed-up against the body, and isn't floating.

Basswood is very much like mahogany, without some of the complexity in the mids (more dull sounding, less richness). The evolution should work perfectly well in basswood guitars, I know it does in mine, since its dark the evolution really balances it out. I can see it being a problem in brighter pieces of basswood, but then that could be said about any type of wood.

Re: Evolution in bright mahogany guitar?

I have had one in a basswood Ibanez and it was HUGE sounding clear yet it could fill a track. Yeah they are not meant to clean up and there is the compression because of such high output. I have an Evo 2 coming for my New Rg-3120!!!

I assume you're comparing it to vintage PAFs, because the EVO is only like 13k.

It's got lower output than any pickup in Duncan's Custom line.

To be certain, though, nobody is going to use an EVO to record their clean lines.

Re: Evolution in bright mahogany guitar?

This is not my experience with the evo at all.
In my les paul studio lite, it was icepick bright, and extremely hot.
I put a JB in this guitar, and it is much better. Not as bright, and not as hot.
I guess it really depends on the guitar.

Re: Evolution in bright mahogany guitar?

Am I the only one who kind of digs 'unforgiving' pickups, and even amps?

I feel like I have to try harder with the less forgiving ones, or they end up muddying up my technique.

EMG's, Evo's, VHT's... mmm. All it does is make you a cleaner player ;).

Ok, i was going to write two different long paragraphs about this but they both ended up going nowhere. :laugh2: Basically, I agree with you though. i like the idea of certain pieces of gear making me a more precise guitarist by pronouncing my flaws. As long as they have good overall tone. :6:

I'd better submit this S.O.B. before i rewrite it again.:13:
