Well, you'd certainly get all the low end rumble along with the shimmer at top. At least that's what I figure given how the recordings of my guitar through my amp sounded.

Problem is, that boom and sizzle are the first things cut when you start mixing.

At the end of the day, whatever gets the job done. There is a proverb I love: it will be better than good, it will be done; that applies here.

If all you can afford is $26 and lots of time getting it right that's better than not doing it at all. But it certainly won't make your job easier.

Re: Excelvan BM-800 condenser mic $25.99 Amazon deal

True, but if you're just a hobbyist on a tight budget, it's still a decent deal.
My H4 has a few compressor plugins that I'm going to try the next time I record something. That and I'm going to mess with the mic position.
I know that it's possible to spend $100's to $1000's on condenser mics. Which is nice if you're doing professional recording and have the budget for it. But for the weekend warrior, it's not too bad.

Not sure compression is what you want.

If you are mic'ing it from a few feet away, compression is going to bring up all of the room nastiness. And if you close mic, the amp should be compressing naturally.

Better to monitor with headphones and EQ the amp until you get a tone that works well with the mic.

Cool, I'll keep that in mind. I'm a tinkerer and I like trying different approaches. It's not like I'm on a deadline. I suppose that I could try close micing, as the spec sheet rates this thing for up to 130dbs, which is way louder than what my amp is putting out in my little jam room.

Re: Excelvan BM-800 condenser mic $25.99 Amazon deal

I'm excited about comparing it with a $200 AKG. That's also a budget mic but is eight times the price. I would have to set a bunch of stuff up and find out if my WinXP desktop still works. Set up amps and mic stands, find guitars, tune them, fret notes, pick them... Where does it end? Is there enough caffeine in North America to make all that happen? My schedule is pretty tight: I need to get precisely nothing accomplished by the time I die.

Re: Excelvan BM-800 condenser mic $25.99 Amazon deal

That's the thing about budgets. For me $200 might as well be $2000.

Necessity is the mother of something-something. :)

Fortunately everyone is listening to sh1tty streams on sh1tty earbuds from devices with sh1tty converters and amplifiers. So you have that in your favour!

Re: Excelvan BM-800 condenser mic $25.99 Amazon deal

Right. Because if music is *free, why would anybody want to spend money for something to listen to it on?

The general rules for recording are
" leave your Mic to Recorder signal as unaffected/unprocessed as possible. Record the strongest signal you can with out going into clipping. Leave all your proccessing for your mixdown. "

I will keep that in mind.

If you have amps that sound good at low (volume @ 1 or less) volumes..this thing will make them sound pretty sweet recorded...that's where it shines lol. My SM 57 (and various budget dynamics - Audio Technica MB2k, AKG D40, Chinese SM 57 clone.. don't sound anywhere near as nice/full/dynamic/realistic/sweet recorded at low volumes) I usually stick mine 3-8 inches from the grill for low volume recording (facing straight at the speaker, about halfway between speaker edge & dustcap..depending on my ears haha) ...maybe with just a tiny bit of delay in the loop to sweeten things up if required...that gives me a killer recorded sound from just about every amp I've tried mine with. (No post prod needed.. stuff sounds just like it does recorded as it does in the room).

I'm yet to try one of mine with a really loud cranked amp though... 3-4 on the volume knob is as far as I've gone (with pretty much the same setting as above..)

I've found that stuff sounds better if it's not maxed out (before clipping). Like rounder/sweeter with more headroom (if you ease the levels back a bit and listen for the sweet spot..)

Around -12Db is where a lot of people aim for.

I just push mine up to where it sounds best through my phones/monitors.. I guess it might be -12Db ...or maybe not :laugh2:

Re: Excelvan BM-800 condenser mic $25.99 Amazon deal

I try to keep it between -12 to -6.

This could be good for me. When I play at home, it's about as loud as a ray of sunlight falling on the Earth.

Re: Excelvan BM-800 condenser mic $25.99 Amazon deal

I do my recording at night (more enjoyable..less likelihood of interruption/disturbance from my kids :p) & I've found that given my recording conditions/equipment (large high-ceilinged/un-carpeted/un-sound treated room/cheap handheld recorder/cheap mic preamp :laugh2:) low volume recordings with these Chinese cheapo mics actually sound a lot better than cranked day-time recordings with my dynamics ...with the added benefit of not agitating my land-shark/mafioso neighbors :D

I'm getting a second one so I can record drum tracks live in stereo. I have been very impressed as to how well they do on guitar cabs. Been setting mine about three feet from the face of my 4x12. Killer!
