Exercises for power chords...

So this is really embarrassing... I have completely neglected standard tuning since I got into metal, and to be honest i am tired of drop tunings... so I will be going back to standard, what are some good exercises for very fast power chords changes slides etc?

Re: Exercises for power chords...

Yep on Master of Puppets. The verses have this insanely hard power chord slide/staccato thing going on and the opening riff has those choppy descending power chords alongside brutal muted eighths.

Re: Exercises for power chords...

Learned it a while ago... maybe ill just practice that over and over? the verse has some pretty fast power chord changes...

Re: Exercises for power chords...

maybe battery? I havent learned that one, master of puppets is definitely challenging and fun though... but it didnt take me all that long to learn vs something like lamb of gods laid to rest... but thats in drop D

Re: Exercises for power chords...

I wouldn't call Master of Puppets insanely hard. Battery is more of a right hand exercise. I'd check out Harvester of Sorrow, Shortest Straw, Dyers Eve, Damage Inc, Phantom Lord, etc. I don't find much of Metallica to be difficult honestly, but I'm not sure what you know and what you don't know.

Re: Exercises for power chords...

Yea me neither, so give me some standard stuff that is really hard on the left hand in terms of power chords and stuff...

Re: Exercises for power chords...

Those songs I named are pretty demanding so far as that a loose left hand won't make it sound nearly as right as it should. Being fast and precise is the challenge. I couldn't name much besides Metallica to help you out.

Megadeth - Holy Wars

That's a wrist breaker. A blend of lightning-fast riffage, e-string chunking and fast power chordage.

Phantom Lord has pretty fast power chord slides back and forth.

Aces High is power chord insanity... lots of em' in that song.

Re: Exercises for power chords...

Cannibal Corpse - Frantic Disembowelment. You have been warned.

Re: Exercises for power chords...

wrist breaker on the left or right hand tho? because my right hand is pretty insanely fast these days, for example learning master of puppets all down picked was not hard for me...

Re: Exercises for power chords...

really dont like cannibal corpse at all, and right now im playing in standard e, soon c standard...

Re: Exercises for power chords...

You guys must all be joking.

Nobody mentioned so far power chords better than Billie Joe Armstrong from Green Day.

Re: Exercises for power chords...

Apart from stuff already mentioned..

Try some Anthrax ..anything off State Of Euphoria or better yet..Persistence of Time. Scott Ian is a monster with power chords..

Anything from Annihilator's first two..

Testament, Coroner, Slayer (War Ensemble is the ****!)

Or in a more trad/80's metal (power-chord based) context, some Helstar (Iron Maiden on steroids) ..preferably something off "A Distant Thunder" or.. for a good workout.. "Nosferatu" :)
