Expensive guitar/cheap amp vs. Cheap guitar/expensive amp !

Re: Expensive guitar/cheap amp vs. Cheap guitar/expensive amp !

Put a Duncan JB in the bridge of a cheap guitar and plug it into a Friedman BE100 or Smallbox hidden behind a barrier and play just about anything.

Now, take a PRS Custom, or Reissue LP, or Custom Shop Strat... and plug it into a Crate whatever hidden behind a barrier and play just about anything.

If the player is using their ears objectively (and not worrying about the logo on the headstock)... the Friedman will win every time.

In an acoustic guitar, high-end guitars win every time for tone. In solid bodies... amps are FAR more important.

Half assed is still half assed, whichever buttock is in question.

How about this:

expensive guitar/expensive amp vs. cheap guitar/cheap amp?

Bankruptcy vs. cheap thrills?

Owning a '59 Les Paul + Trainwreck whilst living in a Skid Row tent OR rocking a Squier Bullet into a Marshall MS-4 next to your pool at your Mansion overlooking Malibu?

I think with the current state of amps, there's a lot more consistency in build quality with the major manufacturers than with guitars. Play 10 Epiphones and 10 Gibsons in a store, and it's anybody's guess how many will be "good". But play, say, your average Blackstars and Oranges in big box stores, there's not as much variation. For amps, I've found that "you get what you pay for" is a little more true than with guitars.
