Long sustain != good sound.

The trouble starts right there.

And even the theories about what sustains long and what doesn't are all BS. Tell David Gilmour that his bolt-on with floating tremolo doesn't have sustain.

Uh, and a V doesn't have the best upper fret access. The joint is very thick. A SG with the right SG variety neck joint is much better.

Explorer: It looks wicked (Running Wild) , but also iconic (Allen Collins)
Upper access is great, very comfy to me. plus I can play sitting.

Explorer, it can be played just fine while sitting down while it also looks real wicked!

I've wanted one for the longest time but can't find a place for it... :(

Re: Explorer or flying V, Which would you prefer

Explorer...Any day.. I have a v and it gets very little play ..it sounds great but I find it very uncomfortable sitting and when standing a pain to balance.
I keep getting tips about playing it sitting like u play a classical guitar. But the truth is you cant. it is not the same.

Re: Explorer or flying V, Which would you prefer

If I could get past the headstock (I'm kinda hot/cold with the "hockey stick" look) , the Explorer is the perfect Gibson IMHO. It has a fast response, there's plenty of body there so the tone is big and full with the low end of a Les Paul and it has just as much sustain as any other Gibson out there. They may look radical, but I think it incorporates some of the best tonal qualities of Gibsons. I've owned several Gibsons over the years and the Explorer that I sold was my only real regret. The straight pull through on the headstock really makes the difference, the Explorer I had had incredible tuning stability, a feature that I always felt was one of Gibsons biggest weaknesses.

As I've played more and more guitars over the years, a 25'' scale, beefy profile neck with arrow headstock with an Explorer body would be my ideal guitar. The shape was always comfortable to me and I liked how large the whole guitar was, it fit my larger frame really well. Great, great guitars that are pretty underrated.

Re: Explorer or flying V, Which would you prefer

Greetings,
This is my first post and I hope that I am on the right track with this question...I prefer the shape of the Explorer because it is easier to balance when either sitting or standing. That is my preference only...I don't think one is better than the other; it is a matter of applicability and player preference.

Welcome aboard. Yeah I gotta agree, the V isn't the most practical guitar, but it's a true classic. I got one for that reason. And you'll find out, the vast majority of this forum is opinions, and that's what makes it so valuable; so many different ways to look at things, ways that you don't think of on your own. There's no right or wrong, and I've learned a lot from the guys here. Lots of experimentation taking place every day & some cutting edge ideas. You'll enjoy it.

What!?!?!?!

Are you serious?

I don't quite get what this is about.

I have already stated that I like Vs, and better so than Explorers.

However, it is a fact that the neck joint of some SGs is thinner and smoother than on the V. Also, in a SG the whole neck sticks out more to the left, about a low fret widthworth. That places the highest frets more towards your left shoulder.

Not that it matter much.

Re: Explorer or flying V, Which would you prefer

I like how SGs popped up in a V vs Explorer thread. My Electra Outlaw has better upper fret access than anything else I've ever played. So, in this V VS EXPLORER THREAD, I pick a tomato, with a claw hammer following close 2nd.

Re: Explorer or flying V, Which would you prefer

Agreed above, an SG with the thin and high neck joint like the 61RI has better upper fret access than a V (I have both right here).
