Re: Explorer Pic Thread
Ahh...now I realize my post sounded all gushy...so here's a couple negative things about the Hamer Standards
1) They tend to be VERY heavy...10 pounds and up unless you pay a upcharge for "light" wood. In an Explorer, weight is everything..if its too heavy, it will feel like a anvil hanging from your neck. That was one issue I had with mine. Cos all the weight is in the @$$ end, it wants to drag down towards the floor, its worse than a heavy Les Paul. IMO, the optimum weight for an explorer is around 8-9 pounds. . I personally don't care for them under 8 pounds...then I feel they don't balance as well..my current ML is prolly right around 7 pounds and its way too light for me. The Destroyer was the exception..it too was around 7 pounds and it balanced flawlessly. I guess at the end of the day I'd rather have a 10 pounder than a 7 pounder, YMMV of course.
2) They are not quite as "snappy" as an explorer...meaning they have a slower attack/string recovery...not necc a bad thing...just that they feel a bit more like a Les Paul than a true Explorer or SG or Flying V. Thats just a personal nitpick though.
