I bought this white Explorer not because I really wanted a white one, but so I could get an ebony board. It had a repaired, but not touched up, neck crack too, so perfect candidate for a sprayover. I always thought I'd go with black lacquer over the stock white, with just a polish right on the black (no clear coat). Now, after seeing a cardinal red '80's Explorer, I am really torn. That guitar looked ****ing glorious. Always wanted a red one too some day, but I figured I'd get a used Hagar model. I happen to have both black and Dakota Red on hand, and I can't decide.

In either case, the pickups will eventually be changed out for a pair of Phat Staples, and the guitar will be getting a Maestro Vibrola. If I go with red, the hardware will be nickel. If I go with black, the hardware will be gold.

Whaddayathink? Dakota Red and nickel, or black and gold?

How it looks now:

The black look that I always intended to give the guitar:

An '80's one in Cardinal Red (Dakota is a bit more dark and subdued of a red):

The Hagar Explorer (Don't give a **** about Hagar; I just love this guitar's looks):

Re: Explorer refinish poll

White is the best, and i don't care how racist that sounds.

Re: Explorer refinish poll

FWIW, the guitar will definitely not be staying white. I just included that in the poll because I was curious what percentage of people would leave it white. I love the white look, but some day I'll get another white one that doesn't have a cracked neck.

Re: Explorer refinish poll

Black man. Use the ebony board while you have it. You never know when your gonna get another.

Re: Explorer refinish poll

ok fine, if you absolutely must change it, then go with red, cuz it's not every day you see a red explorer.

and then paint it white when you're done. YEESH!

Re: Explorer refinish poll

Silver burst. :) but ill vote red. It looks good. And as mentioned, you see a lot of black explorers. I have one in fact.

Re: Explorer refinish poll

Leave it white. No contest. White nitro looks so badass when it starts to turn yellow.

Re: Explorer refinish poll

Well, I know this is old, but I wanted to post because I finally decided on a color, and it is "none of the above." It's Rustoleum Charleston Green enamel. It's a very dark green, approaching black in tone. That will get me close enough to the black look I originally wanted, but without being quite as standard/boring. Enamels are a ***** to work with compared to lacquers, but until I get a proper spray gun up and running, I'm limited to what comes pre-canned. Here's the color:

Re: Explorer refinish poll

You are going to just paint the body and clean the neck up and tung oil it right? I can't agree with the bridge , it would be way better with a Babicz TOM. Needs some big fat stainless steel frets too at some point.

Re: Explorer refinish poll

The body and neck will be painted green. Definitely going with the Maestro Vibrola, or just leaving the gold T.O.M. Vibrolas are fine, and NOTHING looks better. Babicz is the last product I'd put on there, with their classless logo emblazoned across the damned thing? (WTF is with that ****?) If I ever change the frets, they're getting smaller, not larger – like old Fender frets (6230).

Don't see too many red Explorers, looks really cool though. Kinda reminds me of those 80's Ibanez Destroyers.
Green with gold hardware and white guard should be killer to.
