Explorer shaped guitars

Re: Explorer shaped guitars

If your friend thinks an "Explorer" is to big tell him to look how big it is on Lil Petey Willis from Old Schoiol Def Leppard..

Re: Explorer shaped guitars

Might want to look at a Warmoth build as well. You can get the floyd and any guitar shape you want.

Re: Explorer shaped guitars

Track down a Kramer Condor, very pointy and a Floyd :)

Re: Explorer shaped guitars

This might not be the guitar for him if he finds a Dean Zero too large. However, here's a thought. Scale might be playing a role. The Zero is a 25.5" scale unlike the ESP/LTD guitars, Gibsons, and I think Hamer as well which are all 24.75". Kelly's are also 25.5" but the shape is different and that may be better to his taste. My vote is to have him try a Kelly first.

Also on the "try-it-out" list, a Gibson Traditional Pro Explorer. I know karpathion was saying to try the Explorer Pro and not this, but the Trad Pro also has a smaller body (a 4% reduction according to Gibson). I have a regular Gibson and the Trad Pro and there is a pronounced difference. I honestly prefer the size of the Trad Pro... just feels better to me. I've had no experience with an Explorer Pro, but if he can find one, I would encourage him to try that as well.

As far as this effecting his lead playing, I don't think it will be a problem. The shape has no effect on my playing at all. BUT... I did have an Epiphone Explorer that was SUPER neck heavy and that DID affect my playing. I spent half of my left hand energy keeping the guitar up! Gibson balances their Explorers and this has never been a problem on either of the two I own.

I wouldn't worry about pickups, those are easy to swap. IF you have a good tech, you can retro fit a Floyd too.

Re: Explorer shaped guitars

Didn't they make one for what's his name from Scorpions with a smaller Explorer body back in the day?

Is that Dean Hollywood Z still for sale on here?

Re: Explorer shaped guitars

The Kelly was originally bigger IIRC and they made it smaller (for the tiny Marty Friedman maybe, I can't recall exactly).

Technically yes. It's mine.

Needs pups, new electronics and a good setup though. I'm throwing it up on eBay starting @ .99 no reserve probably tonight. I'll post up a link in the trading post when I do.

Jackson made both a King Kelly and King V... Both were downsized a little for mass distribution

Re: Explorer shaped guitars

doesn't have a Floyd, but it's beyond me why Ibanez don't produce these Destroyers as a regular model. Looks better than ANY solid body model they currently offer.

Re: Explorer shaped guitars

That's the one, like I said, I've never played one, but they have a lot of fans.

I think it's Ascension, he speaks highly of them. I dunno, maple neckthru with an ebony board makes a bright guitar, Carvin likes that combo, so maybe that's how yours was? I had the same problems with my neckthru Kamikaze, but I've played the bolt ons and they're almost nothing alike.

My old one was a recipe for bright. Maple body, ebony board, BRASS nut, kahler trem. weighed about 70lbs in the case.. (not really, but was a killer)

I liked it tho... not all were bad tho, many were awesome

The Gibson explorer 90 was available for a while, the body was 90% the size of a full sized explorer. Matthias' new Domenget guitars are also scaled down explorers
