Explorer with Custom/Pearly Gates & V with Saturday Night Specials - or vice versa?

I currently have three Les Paul Traditionals of different flavors (Whole Lotta Humbuckers/Gibson 59 Tributes/Dimarzio Transitions) along with a Strat sporting a Custom 5. Looking to get a little more adventurous next time. I am mainly a rock guy with wide interests - Classic 70's to Modern Hard Rock (Stones, Skynyrd, Bad Company, GNR, STP, Foo Fighters, Three Days Grace, Disturbed). Given an Explorer and a Flying V, which set would you put where? Custom Bridge/Pearly Gates Neck vs Saturday Night Specials. I obviously am not looking for them to sound the same. My amp is a Mesa Boogie Express 5:25 Plus.

Hi there! Nice to know you have a V and a Explorer.
I tried the Custom SH-5 Bridge + Pearly Gates neck. To my ears, they weren't a perfect match. The PG lack the bass and power to compete with the SH-5. The 59' was a much better match and it's perfection for me! The SH-5 is definitely a WINNER in the bridge. You could try it with a WLH in the neck.

PS. I have been considering getting something like the SNS for my Flying V.

Good to know.. Ive been thinking of putting a Pearly in the neck of one of my axes as I have 59s in several.

To the op.. I have a Custom 8 in the bridge of my Explorer and a 59/4b in the neck. Great set! Covers alot of ground.

The Pearly is amazing neck pickup. I nailed Santana's tone with it. I also got Slash's tone, just with a lot more treble. The only bad thing is that it couldn't keep up with the SH-5 in the bridge. Definitely an Alnico II or V pickup is needed in the bridge to get the best out of it. I hope a fellow forum member can help you.
Haven't played the Custom 8 + 59 (Alnico IV) pickups, but I heard great things about them.
I use a SH-5 and a 59n'J in my DBZ Bolero. It's amazing there!

The Sat Night Specs go in the Explorer, because...

The Custom / PG, being the "adventurous" set goes in the adventurous guitar, because...

Thanks man. Good advice on the 59. I had a Custom/PG combo in a Trad Pro II, but it just didn't feel right. I think it would have been better with a Custom 5.

No offense to OsvyRock, but that is damn hard to argue with.

Yeah! I believe pickups should kinda be matched to Alnico II with Alnico II or V (in the bridge), Alnico V with Alnico V (or ceramic) in the bridge, and Ceramics with Ceramics (or Alnico V again).
I agree with you. The AII of the PG + C5 should have matched fine.

No harm done! If the SNS sounds like this, they should be a nice pickup set to have. I have considered them for my V. (I'm using Slash's AII Pro at the moment).
I hope Seymour Duncan release even more humbucker sets the next year.

Lets all be clear - none of these are bad guitar / pickup combos....

I currently have a Custom and a PG in my Epi LPC, and have a Custom and a Jazz in my Gibson LPS. IMHO, the Jazz is a better fit. But the Custom/Jazz combo is one of my all time favorites.

When I get around to replacing the Burstbuckers I have in my Explorer, it'll either be the Custom/Jazz combo or an Alpha and Omega set. I'm still pondering that one.

I have a Jazz in the neck pos of several guitars.. Its a classic all arounder... And, I have 59s in the neck of several guitars too. Again, classic. I would like to find a neck pup with alil more beans/tude for a current project.. not too hot, but just alil more

Try a 59b in the neck position. It worked for Dime.

The custom I had in my explorer sounded great, but you can't go wrong with either combo

I am not a person that thinks the Explorer and a V sound a whole lot different from one another. I am with Ace here, though. Use the SNS in the Explorer just because.

I had a Carvin SC90 a few years back... put a PG neck in it and a Blues Saraceno trembucker (PATB3) in the bridge. Tones for days....

Just a curiousity I have, but why is the PG supposedly less able to keep up with hotter bridge pups?? The a2 mag? I mean the wind doesnt seem that much less.

Re: Explorer with Custom/Pearly Gates & V with Saturday Night Specials - or vice vers

I don't think it is less able...I mean you'd get a tonal difference with a magnet that has tighter lows, but as far as 'keeping up' it would be fine.
