My PVC30 gets much brighter the more I turn it up. I turn my treble down as the volume goes up. Does it happen in both the clean and drive channels?
You could find out if it is the speaker by plugging into an extension cab.
I can think of three things. 1. Even though they're only a year old, those tubes could be shot. EL84s aren't the longest lasting tubes. And a bad 12ax7 will really screw up your tone, since these are the tone-shaping tubes. 2. Is the boost switch engaged? That thing is about useless, IMO, and will turn your tone to crap. 3. I've noticed that the reverb circuit can do some crazy stuff to the sound of my PV. It can add noise and subtract volume if there is a faulty connection. Does the darkness change with reverb adjustment?

Don't get me wrong, the amp sounds absolutely awesome. It just gets very bassy and a little bit muddy at really high volumes. (I mean past 8-9)
I never use the boost switch (that thing is completely useless) and I VERY occasionally even use the drive section. (All it does is add in 2 more power tubes, IIRC) If I ever use the drive section, I crank the post gain and use the PRE as volume. So actually I use the drive section for more clean headroom. I thought about the reverb tank, too. That's the one fall of this amp to me, I've always found that thing to be a little flakey. I'm pretty sure that's what causes my amp to rattle when a speaker is in it. There is no speaker in the amp, instead I added an additional 1/4 jack with those wires. I have a Celestion annv. g12h and a greenback (gave away the jensen for my buddie to use w/ his Epi valve jr) in a 2x12 indivually to that jack and the ext. speaker.
This really is a beautifal sounding amp. In my bedroom I play on the clean channel with the amp at about 4 or 5 for cleans and about 7-8 for lead. I use a tubescreamer for real overdrive. The carpet in my bedroom is very dense and thick. I don't have the problem when playing in my room, but when I jam with a drummer (usually in a garage or in a fairly small warehouse) that's when I get this problem. Maybe it is just the coupling with the floor, but it sounds like it's coming from the speakers. I've thought about getting an amp stand before, maybe I will.
As for the tubes, they glow orange write above the white thing in the middle in between the springs. (sorry I dont know tube terms) I think the orange on the metal on the tip is just a reflection, but I could be wrong. It looks like its orange on the tip. Usually all tubes do this, no? I've always thought that until i noticed my buddies brand new valve jr, the power tube was glowing blue. That's why I mentioned that...
