Faded SG refin

The Dali

MeltedClockologist
Hi everyone, I just bought a Gibson faded SG that it intend to refinish. The guitar is in great condition overall, but it does have a neck repair ( of course!). The repair was a pro-job and it looks great. I am thinking about a solid color in order to clean up the neck joint and update the pick guard from the full batwing to the smaller guard. I'll post pics as I go through the refinish.

Re: Faded SG refin

I've gotta say, I really like the look of the faded SG, and that headstock repair is practically invisible in the pix. I'll be watching with great interest, but all I can say is, this better be good...

Re: Faded SG refin

That's a damned fine headstock repair. If anything, I find the obvious asymmetrical body wood joints to be in greater need of disguising.

Vintage off-white is always classy. A pearlescent car colour would spice things up.

Re: Faded SG refin

The repair is really nice. I agree on the body wood - I'd love to do a trans-green but the the mis-matched wood pieces drive me crazy. So... solid color it is! I'll try to take her apart tonight and show some pics.

Re: Faded SG refin

Considering that I've been trying to commit myself to refinishing my Les Paul SG in dark metallic "Robot" green for a few years now.....I voted for the dark metallic green!

Re: Faded SG refin

Ok, color aside, tonight I'm going to take the guitar apart to check out the electronics and the routing. I'll post some pictures.

Once concern I have is that it will likely cost me about $60 - $70 in materials to do the work myself. I'm getting a quote for a pro to do the paint. If reasonable, it might make more sense to have a pro do the paint. More to come.

Re: Faded SG refin

Oooo, that orange one is awesome!

But I agree that dark green metalic looks amazing on an SG as well.

Looking forward to following this thread and the progress of your SG.

Seafoam w/ WHite Pearloid guard and white buckers and Gold Top Hats

Leave it the Hell ALONE!!!! Looks great as is

Pelham Blue / Spearmint metallic or some such mellow sparkly

Re: Faded SG refin

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you can't use rings and the 61 style guard on the big guard guitars. the pickup routes are too big and the channel is in a different place.

I have a spare small guard, lolz.

Re: Faded SG refin

Izzo, you are right... I just took a look and short of filling all the routes it will not be possible to use the smaller pickguard and rings. No worries, not a huge deal.

Ok, a few pictures of the progress so far.

Re: Faded SG refin

As you can see, there is a route down the middle of the guitar, and to the right to the control cavity. I was very impressed by how neat the work was, no issues here at all.

The pickups are definitely OEM 490T/490R. They will be for sale shortly! :)

Some random pickup rings to illustrate that the cavities are too large.

Re: Faded SG refin

Here's a thought. If you still want to do a burst finish a la SG Supreme, could you not skim a small amount of mahogany away from the top and back of the guitar then apply veneers in, say, flamed maple? This would also serve to cover all of the existing routs and any filling that you deem necessary. On the other hand, it would send the budget rocketing skywards.

EDIT - I am liking your neck position pickup surround. ;)

Re: Faded SG refin

I was also VERY impressed by the wiring. Again, this is an entry-level Gibson... but the work was neat, tidy and pro.

I was originally going to re-wire this with push-pulls... but I might use the stock harness given how well it was wired. We will see.
