Famous Albums that use...

Re: Famous Albums that use...

Vai was a big proponent of the Bogner sound from the Sex and Religion era all the way up to the First G3 tour. After that, when the Ultra Zone came out in '99, he switched to his Legacys' (I have one and they're awesome!) But The Bogner sound is at its best in its rawest form on Alien Love Secrets, and live photos of the 1st G3/Fire Garden eras show him running Marshalls, Soldanos, and Bogners simultaneously.

Satch uses Soldanos a lot on record, but he goes through so many tones they're hard to pick out in specific spots.

Re: Famous Albums that use...

I honestly wonder if Vai really uses the Legacy's. I have this feeling that he uses mostly if not only the Bogners.

Funny thing, goto his site and it mostly focuses on the Bogners and Egnaters. For one Japan tour he only took the Bogners.

Is Billy Gibbons using Marshalls and G12M's or H's mic'd by a 57?

Was SLASH using V30s and an SM57 on Appetite?

What did Trower use in the 70s?

I own a Legacy half-stack... after hearing Vai's tone on all the Legacy-era albums (1999 onward) and comparing the sounds to what my own amp is capable of producing, I'm confident in my belief that Vai uses Legacies for his live rigs. They're very sensitive to the types of tubes they run off of, too, and the sound of the ones off the shelf can be VASTLY improved with better tubes, so if yours doesn't sound as good as his do, and you haven't got the best tubes cooking in there, thats probably why.

I know there's a buttload of gear conspiracy theorists out there that have some great ideas, stuff about Vai's Legacies having Bogner guts, etc etc but I can't believe them unless photos, words from Vai's/Bogners/Carvin's mouth, or my ears tell me otherwise.

As far as what's in the studio, it's most likely the Legacies plus any number of amps he feels like using. I've seen pics of them mic'd up right next to old Marshalls, Fenders, boutique jobs, etc.

Re: Famous Albums that use...

One of Lyle Lovett's guitarists uses a Bad Cat Cub, which is similar to a Matchless 15-watter (Lightning I believe). Keith Urban has used Matchless C-30 and Bad Cat amps extensively. I think someone else besides Cray was also using Matchless amps on the Crossroads DVD. Check the Matchless and Bad Cat websites for other artists you might know.

Re: Famous Albums that use...

Are Bad Cats and Matchless using V30 or H30 or Blue equivalents? Do tell

BTW had to say this - my housemate did the digital video/photo spread for Vai's house which is up for sale. While I still doubt he uses Legacy's - lol I was stunned in the online tour when I saw about 3 Legacy half stacks in his at home studio and NO other amps in site.

Then again, he is aware this stuff was going to end up online.

No matter what - everyone I have met who knows Vai says he is a GREAT GUY! I say he is a genius player.

BTW - Satch uses Soldano?

Yeah, Satriani has used an SLO on and off since The Extremist.

Pics pleez!!

And yeah, I've seen Soldano Amps in the credits of Satch albums ever since FIABD. I couldn't tell you what spots they're heard on though.

Re: Famous Albums that use...

A lot of nineties alternative (not grunge) bands used Matchless. Toad the Wet Sprocket and the Gin Blossoms were a couple of examples. Also Brian Blush formerly of the Refreshments used a Matchless Chieftian in that band. His tones absolutely ruled.

These days, at least by looks of the photos I've seen, the Gin Blossoms have gone back to the vintage Fender and Marshall type stuff.
