FANES?

OK, I got several vintage gear hounds riding my A$$ for not having 'Fanes', being as how I now have an old Hiwatt amp anfd the stock speakers for Hiwatts are Fanes..

So.., Do the new Fanes retain enuf of that old Fane speaker sound to even bother wiht?

I am thinking of a 2x12. Seeking old speakers is a game I do not ant to [lay any longer, casue I know that the law of averages dicates my luck is due to run out, casue I got some truly excellent old speaker cabs before.

more often than not anymore, old speakers will be shot. People sell them cause they sound decent at;low volumes, but rattle when cranked due to the old worn out soft cones.

So shysters sell them banking that you think they sound good enough at medium volumes so that they can dump them .

Re: FANES?

My Hiwatt is loaded with original square back Fane Crescendos. When they were new, they were never considered a great speaker. History has painted them with the 'mojo sauce' brush for some reason. Sonically, they are rather flat sounding, hard to drive, and break up almost instantly. It's very hard to have a loud, clean sound with them. They do have a sound, however. I would recommend trying before buying.

Re: FANES?

My bandmate's early Eighties VOX AC30 came with Fane loudspeakers. Nothing special - even thirty years ago.

The comment about not coping with being pushed hard by the amplifier output stage rings true. Just where the AC30 should have been getting interesting, it was made to sound flubby and vague.

I have not tried the recent Fanes but doubt they will be in the same league as a good vintage set. The ones to go for are the cast frame speakers made 1972 or earlier, with the pulsonic cone stamps. The later Fanes are OK speakers but the tone is not quite as good in my opinion. Those old cones have the magic.

The speakers the Hiwatt crowd rave about are the 122/142 model 50 watters with the purple hiwatt labels on the back. But the truth is any of those old pre-1972 Fanes are well worth trying out.

Different Fane speaker models can be picked up fairly cheaply on ebay etc, but I agree this is a real crapshoot for buyers. Everybody sells them "in good working order" just to get as much money as possible for them, when actually 9 out of 10 times they sound like crap and have serious problems when tested properly or used in a recording studio environment at decent volume. Thats if they survive being posted - dont get me started on that!

Modern production speakers are always a much safer buy in that respect, but do not expect the same tone as a good vintage pulsonic speaker. Not saying the new ones will be bad speakers, they are probably very good. Just not the same as vintage.
