Farewell to 18watt.com

Some of you may already know this, but one of the best and seminal websites on amp construction and modifications will be closed. I learned quite a bit about the amps, and am happy to be an owner of an sIII TMB, which I picked up off the site.

It follows to be mindful of what you say to others on the board here to ensure that the SD forum (or any other board) doesn't follow suit.

Here's the quote off the homepage.
In recent months, discussion on the 18watt site has diverged greatly from the original intent of this forum. It has become taxing on the time and good will of the moderators and admins and petty arguments have become overly tiresome. Therefore, it is time to close down the 18watt.com forum. A great majority of the information required to build or fix 18watt-type amplifiers is found in the Downloads section and examples are posted in the Gallery. Therefore, the FAQ, Downloads and Zounds sections and the Gallery will remain online for the foreseeable future (at least until the end of the 2007 calendar year. Also, there will be a new website called sewatt.com which will be online very soon where discussion of single ended guitar amplifiers will be welcome. Thank you for your participation and good times these last six years. Please take this opportunity to relax and play your guitar. Sincerely, the moderators and admins of 18watt.com

Hell yeah, just goes to show how good this forum is and how we should all make sure it stays that way.

Re: Farewell to 18watt.com

That's a shame. I learned about half of what I know about amp-building from 18Watt.com, and as a result now have a great amp that I love. There were some folks who put a lot of time into developing that site; tracking down 18 Watters, documenting their design, drawing schematics, etc. However, I think the 18 Watt foundation was seen by many as a springboard into boutique amp-building; a way to "design" your own amp for sale, without actually designing it. A few actually added something worthwhile and sell some nice amps, others just get into "my tweak is better than your tweak" shouting matches. I'm guessing their OT section was getting out of hand, too. I'm not surprised Graydon and the other mods decided it was no longer worth the grief.

RIP 18 Watt.

That's too bad, I learned a lot on that forum and am a happy builder/owner of one of Jersy Aaron's TMB kits.

I don't know all of the politics surrounding JA, but he was very helpful to me during and after my build.
