Artie the 21 day policy is Simply great but many of us die hard Seymour fans are not in the USA, I live in India. I dont even have a dealer out here. I have to order my pup or ask some one to get on there trip to the USA. I ordered my JB still waiting for it to come . What am I supposed to do if it is faulty?
Ok how do I cooreect reverse polarity ? Flip the magnet?

I also own a JB which is out of phase if I wire it as shown in the schematics. All you have to do is swap the 2 wires of one coil (don't know the colors by heart). If you are then out of phase with the other pickups you have swap the wires of the other coil instead.

Re: Faulty SH-4 (JB) pickup

Yeah I had thought of that. Hey can someone inform Evan or seymour regarding this. The Duncans are great pups but this cld be a real turn off. for some one who is not on the forum and just changes to Duncans to get a great tone and then is turned off because he gets a tone he does not want thinking it to be the tone off the pup.

Re: Faulty SH-4 (JB) pickup

Hmm so if the pup wire coloring is mixed up how can I tell whic is the begining and end of each coil.
PSY what u say makes sense, but that should not happen, with a prodution.

Re: Faulty SH-4 (JB) pickup

Jocelyn, in my case I wired it the same way like suggested on the schematics (with split-option). Result:
- coils in series were out of phase
- JB split parallel with middle SC was ok
So I knew that the coil for split-mode was correctly and I swapped the wires of the other coil.

I did not further think about that, just resolved to remember this fact when I re-wire my JB one day. But sure you are right: That should not happen, but I forgave SD the moment I heard it in-phase.

Re: Faulty SH-4 (JB) pickup

so you mean I shd try conneting the green to hot output and the balck to ground red and white connected. If it does not perform as the way it is shown in the shematics ( red and white connected black hot out put and green to ground)

Re: Faulty SH-4 (JB) pickup

IMO that wouldn't change anything. you have to swap the wire of one coil. green with red or white
OR black with red or white

As the pickup is erroneous I do not know which color. Seperate red and white and check it out with an Ohm-meter. Swap two wires which have a resistance < infinite (should be around 8 k).

Maybe someone here can explain better

Re: Faulty SH-4 (JB) pickup

thanks man, I get wht u r saying.I just hope I dont have to do all of that. The Pickup has still not arrived yet. I just hope it is not stuck in the customs. (we got some wiered import laws out here)

Re: Faulty SH-4 (JB) pickup

interesting, I had the same problem with an "old" JB - I bought it new (5ish years ago), but it was my first go, so I just swapped the wires round till it worked OK and supposed it was me or the wrong diagram in the box - bought lotsa pups since and never a problem.

Re: Faulty SH-4 (JB) pickup

Hey this is very interesting, maybe someone at SD shld be noted regarding the same. Imean what abt a new byer of the pup he wld be toatlly turned off!

Re: Faulty SH-4 (JB) pickup

I feel sorry for the person who buys one of the pups
and doesn't realize there is a problem.

While many of us (myself included) did a detailed listening to the sound
clips on the SD site (I even made a CD a listened thru my
home stereo, NOT my computer, to the specifics) for the sound we
wanted, I think many do not. They probably just buy a stock guitar,
and think "I need name brand pups" and just buy whatever.
then they install a faulty pup and are dissapointed!

Exactly, maybe thats one of the reasons why some review the pup as being bright, and end up being dissapointed

Re: Faulty SH-4 (JB) pickup

An update:

Yesterday I got my replacement JB pickup for the faulty one that started
this thread. After nervously installing it, the test run proved SUCCESSFUL.
It sounds great, and having a Jazz model in the neck position, the guitar
ROCKS!!

Glad to hear it worked out for you!!! I think we should probably keep this thread bumped until Evan sees it I'm sure he'll want to know about what's going on with the JB's.

Seeing that all the culprits are JB's my guess is the machine, or one of the people making the JB's is making the error. Working in manufacturing I learned that there are certain machines that do the same thing all the time, being that the JB is the most popular pup I'm sure there is a dedicated JB machine. My guess is it needs to be checked out.

I think I got a faulty pup as well in the past. Though, I´m afraid buying a new one (doesnt matter which company). I have only few money and if it doesn´t work..man that should not be :)

Re: Faulty SH-4 (JB) pickup

who is Evan? (sorry, newbie here).

by bumping, do you mean to post short msgs, keeping this thread at the top
of the list, until someone of importance at SD sees it? Does this person
view this forum on a regular basis?

Maybe a good old fashioned snail mail to customer service would help.
I surely wouldn't mind doing that.

Evan is the Sr. VP of Marketing. He is a player who just ordered an awesome Hamer....well you can look at the post in the gear room. Anyways he's on almost daily.

Bumping is exactly like what you said.

Re: Faulty SH-4 (JB) pickup

I just have to wonder how many Faulty JB's might have been cranked out.

Bump for Evan I guess.
